If I wanted one to use as a controller what's the deal?

How much are they, what features do you need, where do you buy one? I'd think I could get by with a pretty bare-bones version, not trying to do anything fancy.

Check out Amazon, and look at their comparison charts.
Operating system, processor, memory, ram, all the same stuff you look at when buying a computer.
I found an Android tablet that was over priced at $149 with a case and screen cleaner. Got it on sale for like $59,and before I got it they, lowered the price to $50, a quick call got me the difference refunded.

Read the reviews and look for reliability issues. Others on here are much better informed then me, and may be able to recommend specific tablets.

If you are reasonably good with computers, tablets aren't too hard to figure out.

An iPad is an iPad, isn't it? Every year they seem to get thinner and lighter and, probably, better, too.

I think a mini is adequate unless you really want the bigger screen.

You are just going to download an application and use the wifi to control some other audio box in your residence.

I recall paying about $250 for iPad mini a couple of years ago. I wouldn't mess around with Android unless you are taking the cheapest route. (Nothing wrong with Android, but Apple has a reputation that they don't make the customer look stupid -- except their PC's and laptops are stupidly expensive!)

Glad you have come around to realize that headless is better.

If you all want to do is use an iPad as audio controller,
the iPad Mini 4 or an iPad Air 2 base WiFi models are no brainers.

Not too complicated. Apple devoured the tablet market for one simple reason. A child can figure one out in minutes.

If you just want a tablet to control a player you can get the cheapest iPad or any cheap android. Or just use a smart phone.

I've had quite a few tablets. The iPad Pro 9.7 currently leads the pack for me and is useful for reading, watching video and listening to music (fair quality on its own, much better through outboard dac/ amp).

Ipad hardware quality is incredible. I like android a lot better as an os, but the total user experience is better on the iPad. And they are expensive. Even the case. I bought the official Apple case and it is perfect but 5 to 10 times more than the many cases on sale at places like Amazon. There seem to be no bargains in the apple world.

I agree the hardware on iPads is high quality. Disagree totally about the O/S. I have had flagship Android, Windows, and iOS tablets and the iOS tablets are just far superior software wise.

I do agree also the Pro is an amazing device. Just ordered one.

For the OP, he did not specify what he wanted to control..what device, with what app. The problem with Android is that many high end manufacturers are slow to produce and update their Android apps. Plus they just look better on an iPad. Case in point, the Linn Kazoo app is much nice on the iPad Air 2. I have not seen the Roon app on Android for my self yet.
