Hi folks.

I'm currently looking for a DAC in the Chord Mojo range as living room solution.

Before ordering a device for testing I'd like to hear what you guys think about it.

Chord Mojo:

The price range looks OK to me.

Price/performance value I need to figure out myself.

The DAC would work as stationary DAC though.
Probably hooked up to 5V permanently.

Signals I'd feed via PI-USB and Toslink.
The automatic input switching would put me in the position to hook up
the TV via Toslink. That's a feature I'm looking for in particular.
I don't want to switch inputs manually.
As all the other audio equipment except speakers, the device will
be hidden. Manual and IR interaction would not work.

Now. Sound.

Most reviews I read are quite positive about the Mojo soundquality.

Comparisons and conclusions though reach from slighty better than an Audioquest Dragonfly 1.2 over slightly better than an iFi iDSD in some areas and finally the designer, Rob Watts, wants John Darko to run a blind test against a dcs Vivaldi. Hmmh !?!?!?

Then I stepped over a comment by another reviewer stating that a simple USB filter (AQ Jitterbug) puts the device one league up. The usual things are happening: Blacker background, lower grain,....
Ah. Ok. Here we go again.
Spending hundreds hours on his proprietary FPGA-DAC solution and forgetting to look properly at one of the meanwhile most widely known and biggest issues in the PC Audio world first. That DAC is a 2015 DAC! Hmmh!?!?

What's your opinion or experience related to the Mojo? Any other DAC suggestions?

Thx

I'm not sure how much this will help you but I have one that I use to drive headphones primarily audeze lcd2s. And I just love what it does with those. I have not used this with speakers, I use the micromega my dac which was actually cheaper than the mojo and does a great job. And it's easy enough to switch inputs on that from a rotary switch on the front. For portability and performance the mojo is amazing.

It's case of right tools for the right job.

The Mojo is meant to be used as a portable device for use with a smartphone. It does not have a properly isolated USB input which is why a USB conditioning device is effective.

For home use Chord make the Hugo TT which does feature "Full galvanic isolation on the HD USB input right up to 384kHz".

First of all. Thx for your feedback.

Schiit I took off the list long time ago.
I listened to the Yggdrasil some time back.
It didn't really feel like "I want that one".
This impression obviously disqualifies all other lower-end Schiits for me.

I also read a bit more about Chord.
3 characteristics I came across, basically keep me away from even trying it:
1. lack of USB noise immunity, 2. lack of details, 3. mellow/pleasing sound (which usually goes hand in hand with 2.)

I know it's all relative. And many probably will disagree.

However. These issues might be and partially are addressed in upper league Chords. I don't think though that related modifications justify the much higher price tag of the Mojo brothers and/or sisters.

Bottom line. For now I closed this chapter.

I have a mojo that I use as a stationary desktop DAC. 1. Not sure if USB noise is really a factor but I use an Audioquest Jitterbug which seems to make a great combination. 2. I guess this is subjective. I feel there is more detail when used in my setup. 3. Again, subjective. To me, mellow no. Pleasing, yes.

According to the designer, the mojo can be and is designed to be left on all the time. One thing I don't like about the mojo is that it does some kind of soft fade in start so you lose the first second of the song. If playing continuous, it is only a problem for the first song in the playlist.
