I have linked to a thread at the NuPrime circle on developing a fairly inexpensive server using the Raspberry Pi. Your positive input might help it's development.

The newer Pi are much more capable than the one I worked with a couple years ago. It was fun but under powered for my needs.

I'd be more interested in using a new Pi as the end-point for a networked Roon player. Since the release of Roon/Bridge 1.2 a couple months ago, Roon now supports Linux on the ARM Cortex A7 processor used in Raspberry Pi. People are already doing it and the cost is minimal, perhaps $35 plus a power supply, case, and misc cheap items.

Abe:

From what you posted a while back, what version of the rpi did you use? As a music server, a rpi2 is sufficient. I have run LMS without hicup, with on board flac decompression of hires files. Rpi3 is just more gravy. Unless you are doing resampling or convolution, audio playback is not a resource intensive task.

Mike (OP): the asylum is not the right place to discuss such project. You'll find find far more knowledgeable and helpful people at Diyaudio.com. People go there to cooperate, build and learn first. Having said this, where is the power on/off switch for the rpi in your offer? This something that is needed to power off the rpi cleanly and avoid corrupting the sd card.

Fyi: I use two rpis for audio, a rpi2 and a rpi3, one as server, the other as streamer.

I was using the rpi as a complete multimedia computer hosting the files and playing back thru a DAC. I wasn't using it simply as a light weight LMS server or client. I ran OpenELEC (XBMC) on it. I don't recall the rpi version but it was a few years ago.

I wouldn't mind playing with a newer generation rpi as a Roon client.

As an aside, I have also run LMS on my Mac Mini down in the basement streaming to the Squeezebox up in the kitchen. That setup has been retired since we moved to our new place.

I have played around with RPi2 using Volumio & piCorePlayer. Not bad but not as good as my WS2012/Bughead rig. What has been an absolute surprise has been an Android/USB Audio Player Pro/external DAC combo. This was brought to my attention by Soundcheck who posted about it on this forum a while back. However, be warned there are some issues setting this up on a non-rooted android. Also, usability is not great but it is hilarious that I have fiddled around so much with LPS and all manner of PC add-ons & "optimi$ation$" to find that my phone (which I have been carrying around all the time) can be made to sound so good, so easily and inexpensively! YMMV.

A couple things need to happen to get decent sound out of a rpi
- a power supply beefy enough, especially if powering a wifi adapter, a ssd, a dishwasher,... I use a homemade 2A linear psu
- a way to output the signal to your dac. I go with an amanero card but one could easily use the usb decrapifyer of the month or a usb to spdif card. The i2s from the rpi has been shown to be far from ideal.

"Beefy power supply" - Yes, I have a custom LPS

"..way to output the signal to your dac" - I go: Pi > JitterBug > Schiit decrapifier > Empirical off-ramp > AudioAero DAC. As I say, sound is OK.. But I prefer the sound from my android phone!
