Just got the following email from Sonic Studio's on their 50% Off Sale. I made a purchase, and thought others might me interested in this sale, especially MAC guys. Bought the SQ+. I have no association with them. Not sure if you have to be on their mailing list to get the discount: "It's that special time of year: the holidays are upon us and we want you and those you care for to have easy access to the best sound available. Now through the end of November, we're making Sonic Studio's Award-winning Amarra products available to you for 50%* off! Amarra Players, Streamers and Room Correction software, new products and upgrades, are all part of the sale. Don't miss this great opportunity to make Amarra part of your playback toolkit!.."

Discount pricing is not on website; can you provide promo code or other information? Thank you for assistance.

I don't want to get cross with them, so I have a message into them asking if I can share the Promo Code they sent me. I did their free trial before and that is why I was in their mailing system. The only reason I didn't purchase after the trial was because my amp had to go in for service, but it was a planned purchase once my system was back up. I'll post the response I get. In the mean time you may want to do the free trial.

Sonic told me I could pass it around. Promo Code is: PROMOBF50. If any problems, email them and I think they will help you out. Running my SQ+ download now. 50% Off is only second best to FREE.

Thanks, used it to buy the Amarra for TIDAL Streaming Player..., posted on November 25, 2015 at 21:00:48

Not sure I'm hearing much of anything better than usual, but I've not done a direct comparison yet and for $19.97 who can complain!

First they came for the dumb-asses
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a dumb-ass

I believe the sale runs through November, and home audio usage is done through the name of Amarra. I like the sQ+ performance, would like to do the iRC but just can not justify it for what I'm doing - but very tempting.

What other Amarra product do you suggest for those who want to get into Computer stored music ?, posted on November 27, 2015 at 16:15:34

I only stream music from Spotfy, iTunes Radio, etc..., so I'm going to be useless for information when using the MacMini as a storage and playback device. Absolutely an external DAC, but you have to define your price range and look at some of the postings on this Asylum for opinions. There are excellent buys for under $250, $800, and $2,000 (how big is your wallet and are you an addict for good sound quality). When you make that decision, also take into account what type of audio output on the MacMini are you going to use (USB or Optical). I also like the Jitterbug. Folks use a number of file management and playback software, but I have no idea what works best on the Mac - you should search for existing postings or post a question if you can not find an answer. Do a search here on the key software options. To control my dedicated MacMini remotely, I run a long monitor cord along the wall to my listen position with a 23" monitor for music selection (I like big screens). And than I utilize a wireless mouse & keyboard to control the Mac remotely. Maybe someone else can point you to existing posts or other websites. Good luck.

Amarra software used to be ridiculously expensive costing thousands of dollars and it came with a USB security dongle that had to be plugged in to enable the software. That was years ago when Amarra was first to the computer audio audiophile market. They had no competition and were able to charge whatever they wanted.

Once ridiculously expensive they are now cheap but ridiculously complex in their software product offerings, many of which appear to have specialized applications and some that overlap in functionality.

SQ+ appears to be geared toward improving the quality of streaming audio from services like Spotify, Pandora, Amazon Music, Apple Music, etc. Most of these services stream relatively low quality lossy compressed music over the internet. The sound quality is acceptable to some but many users including myself can easily hear the difference between these services and their own CD files 'ripped' to their computer disk drives. If streaming services are your main application then SQ+ is probably not a bad choice.

If your main application is playback of local music files from your Mac then the main stream $99 Amarra software is probably the one you want, assuming you go with Amarra to begin with. There are several other excellent choices available these days which is a good thing.

I use Audirvana Plus or Pure Music on my Mac. These can be used 'stand alone' or in conjunction with iTunes. When used in 'integrated mode' with iTunes, you continue to use iTunes to manage your music library and as your main user interface, but Apple's Core Audio is bypassed for higher quality sound. These software packages also offer other benefits like disabling some Operating System features to again improve the sonics and 'memory play' to pre-load music files into RAM so your disk is not being accessed at all during playback. This is also said to improve the sonics in some situations. These software packages include many other features geared toward incrementally improving the sonics.

All you need is a decent USB DAC, USB cable, and one of these software packages (with or without iTunes) to get started. You can store your music on your local disk or an external disk. Your choice.

I basically stream Tidal and Classicsonline. I have Amarro for tidal which cost me only $39.95. It sounds really excellent. For Classicsonline I use there built in player. I am streaming both from a MacBook Pro and really enjoying streaming. Streaming has become 90% of my listening even though I own 5000 cds. By streaming I have an almost limitless supply of music. When a friend or a music site recommends a new album I go to one of my 2 sites and it is almost always there. Abe's suggestion of audirvana is also very good
