I just found out about this device and ordered one. Supposedly you hook a Lima and a Hard drive to your router and you have your own cloud. Lets you access all of your files from all of your devices and keeps them in sync. Looks like a great idea for $99. Am I missing something or does this work as good as they say?

I use JRiver on a PC. All flac files are stored on a external hard drive and that is attached to the PC. The network on the PC is set up for port forwarding with password. I use the Gizmo app on my Nexus and Android phone to access all my music at home through JRiver. Gizmo is a remote app for JRiver. The flac files play at 320KBPS on the remote devices which is fine--remotely speaking. As long as I have a network connection, I can access the home music files--or access them anywhere in the house. I have been running this for about a year and a half without problems.

There are numerous software based solutions for your computer / smartphone that will work but that little box with custom apps looks pretty cool. Plus it looks like all data exchanges are encrypted, probably with hardware assist by the box. Might be fun to play with at $99.

I have a newer Netgear router with USB port and a program called Readyshare. By inserting a hard drive you can backup all your devices, or have them all share stored data like a music library.

Can you access the Files from your tablet or Phone while on the road?

Ok, sorry my help wasn't on target. Read the reviews, though, over on Amazon for the Lima--it's got a long and tortured Kickstarter history and a lot of unhappy owners. Maybe the link below is a safer alternative.

On a side note. are you still enjoying the Teac UD-301? I need to upgrade my DAC and might consider that piece.

In fact I have 2 of them. I have A/B'd them with DACs costing 2 Grand...And they are just as good, confirmed by my panel experts. A great Buy.

I don't know. I don't have either one to test with. When the device joins the network, a ReadyShare vault listing is added to its program files. I assume clicking on it would allow portable devices to access it?

Thanks for the info. Did not know it was a Kickstarter half-baked, not ready for prime time non-starter.

It is possible to access all your files from anywhere in the world from your own computer(s). You may have to spend a small amount each year for domain name, a DNS service and/or a static IP address or some similar service. However, there are some gotchas.

First, if you have a typical home internet connection performance will be slow when accessing remotely. This will be especially true if you have DSL service or other service with a pathetically slow upload data rate. Second, your ISP my have restrictions against running servers on your connection and may force you to purchase a more expensive internet service. Third, and this is the big one. You are opening up your "attack surface" and hanging out a big red flag to hackers. If you don't really understand what you are doing (including all the nooks and crannies of the machine that is your "cloud" you are setting yourself up for major problems.

Finally, if you run your cloud service on a new machine it will cost you money and if you run it on an existing machine it will degrade the performance of that machine for other uses, so there won't be any free lunch.

For $139 and 10 minutes, you're good to go. Access your files on Mobile devices, Laptops or PCs. It also included 3TB of Hard Drive space.

I've raced cars on the track and gliders (sailplanes) in national championships. I've seen more than a few friends depart this vale of tears doing what they loved. I would not store critical data of mine on a computer that is connected directly to the internet. If you can get to it over the net then most likely others can too.

But yesterday I bought a Seagate Personal Cloud for $150 that included 3TB of storage. The Lima would be great for someone that is not that technically orientated and wanted something very small. You do have to provide your own USB drive, so at $99, it is not the cheapest option, unless you already own your own USB Drive.

I am keeping the Seagate and returning the Lima.

by any chance? If so, does it have any particular advantage over a USB drive directly connected to a LMS server? I guess theoretically you could run a Touch at a remote location and have access to all your music at home.

I was going to get another USB drive for file backup and am trying to see how this Personal Cloud thing might be more useful to me. I don't have nearly as much media data as probably most people here do, even all my music rattles around on a 500GB drive.

I use the cloud for Photographs and Videos mostly. My Music Library is about 1.3TB and I store that on a Desktop PC in my office. When I travel, I take the entire music Library on a 2TB western Digital Passport Drive, that can easily fit in my Shirtpocket. Lately however, I am listening to streaming music from Spotify and Deezer and rarely go to my music library anymore.

The Personal Cloud was great to have access to all my Photos from my Phone, as it had limited storage.

Thanks. Actually my general preference is WD over Seagate, though I do use both, and the 2TB WD Passport was exactly what I was intending to buy. The Personal Cloud does sound cool though, but I have to be running a PC for LMS anyway and may as well just have the music data "local" (as it is now on a desktop).

I was thinking that perhaps the Personal Cloud could replace my "manual" backup system, that it would sync with my local drives and I could skip the manual backup whenever I get something new or (more commonly) *change the music file tags*.

I think the Seagate can replace a manual backup system. I have not looked into this, as I have automated my backups on my PC already. Daily auto Backup. But, I may look into this in the future.
