Can someone please explain the differences between Direct Sound, Direct Sound 2, and Wave Out with MS Wave Mapper?

Direct Sound 2 seems to sound better and has slightly more treble.

I am using Terratec 2496 card with Asio Driver. I cannot get the Asio dll file to work at all! See below.

INFO (CORE) : startup time: 710 ms
INFO (CORE) : opening file for playback :
INFO (CORE) : location: "file://D:\44.1kLonelineLonelinessFirstTime\Track11.wav" (0)
INFO (foo_output_asio(dll)) : open : 88200 Hz, LINEAR PCM, 24 bits, 2 channels
INFO (foo_output_asio(dll)) : ASIO device type [channel 0] : Int32LSB
INFO (foo_output_asio(dll)) : ASIO device type [channel 1] : Int32LSB
ERROR (foo_output_asio(dll)) : unsupported output data format.

What's wrong?

You are trying to stuff 24bit audio data into a card that only supports 32bit. I suspect you will be fine when you change your output format to 32bits.

Still can't make it work. I have been playing 24 bit files thru' the card for ages. Changing to 32 bit makes no difference. I have tried 44.1 and 88.2 sampling rates as well.

I don't doubt that you have played 24bit files on that card but the ASIO driver that comes with your card still only supports the Int32LSB format which requires you to feed it 32 bit samples from foobar. Most other player program would do the conversion automatically.

This leaves the sample rate. Have you tried the asiocaps program located on the same WEB site as the ASIO plugin? It tells you not only the supported word length but also the supported sampling rates.

Do you know how I can convert to LSB32 format? The program you mentioned is only meant for XP and I am using 98SE.

Another strange thing. Foobar will not work with EWX 96 Wave Analog in Wave Out or any setting other than MS Wave Mapper. However, Direct Sound will work on EWX Wave Analog.

There are 2 32bit integer formats available in foobar. 32bit fixed point and 24bit fixed point padded to 32. Both of which should work.

However, Win98SE has been not been the focus of much application testing for a while now and I have not done any audio testing on it for a long time. Have you considered upgrading to XP?

Cheers

I have tried both and they would not work with Asio in Foobar with the EWX2496.

I use 98SE because of the control and because of some older software. Will try XP on another computetr but not this sound card.

XP does include compatibility modes that will run programs as 98 would or 2000, etc. So older software shouldn't slow you down!!
