I've been an Apple partisan ever since we bought our first Mac in 1985. Fortunately for me, I don't trust "the cloud", so I did not encounter this latest (iTunes, version 12.2.0) problem (see linked article below). But I do think several heads ought to roll at Apple for this kind of outrage!

Have no plans to use iCloud Music Library, iTunes 12.2, or Apple Music, but thanks for the heads up. I maintain my own local Library on SSD.

This sounds exactly how Microsoft did things during the sclerotic Ballmer Dynasty.

The origin is certainly dueling product managers and competing groups inside, each more intent on pushing the other one down and promoting their own New Hotness than ensuring the overall product delighted people and exceeded the competition.

Already iTunes has been its own crappy development fiefdom outside of iOS and OSX. Just like how MS Office internal developers never played with Windows OS and obeyed their UI rules & implementations.

Why iTunes Match AND iCloud Match? Probably separate implementations and somebody had a snit.

They're no longer afraid of being Steve'd for bullshit like this and nobody high up with the sense and will to knock the nuckleheads together.

Ive & Cook are hardware guys 100%.

Even before 12.2, those of us trying to live with iTunes on Windows computers experienced a multitude of issues including iTunes trying to take over our computers and everything attached to it.

I even gave iPhone 6+ a shot but returned it after I re-confirmed how much I hate iTunes and how Apple tries to lock you into their proprietary software and hardware at every step.

That, and the total cumbersomeness of the Apple environment would sway me to Never use iTunes, or any Apple music program/ storage.

What Are they thinkin'?

There are many things which iTunes does that I like - such as keeping tabs as to how many times I've played a given track, or when the last time I played it was, etc. And I like the iTunes album view - it makes browsing by album very easy and fast. In addition, I have a lot of time invested in getting the meta data of my 1500+ CD's that I've ripped so far (a little less than half my collection) into a semi-useful state with iTunes. The non-iTunes interface of Audirvana is not nearly as nice. (NB: I'm one release back level at present - I understand that Audirvana greatly improved their non-iTunes interface in their current release). The same can be said of HQ-Player, which I also use, whose interface I find particularly clunky, although this player seems to be amazingly customizable. (I haven't even begun to play around with this aspect yet.)

But as long as we're all piling onto iTunes right now, here are a couple of new annoyances I've noticed with the 12.2 version, even though I haven't been hit with the BIG problems:
  • The progress bar which used to appear during your CD rips seems to have disappeared
  • A few tracks get prefaced by garbage characters and require manual editing to clean up
As I say, this is merely annoying for me - the other problems mentioned in the linked article of my OP can be potential disasters.

And Microsoft.

I never really ran iTunes, but my kid has fought it for years. If you change the format from wav to mp3 to put on his iPod, then you duplicate everything. It's great if you rip with it and buy songs and don't want to have a clue.

The problem is that all these folks want to to things for you and screw up because no one tests stuff, that's what users are for. The last Mac Mini Mavericks update that I did reset my ssh port to the default and I couldn't login remotely until I figured that out. Why did they screw with that config file? It had nothing to do with the update for Safari.

I don't envy them though. Updating software always breaks something somewhere, but adding DRM to your CD rips is an unwanted new feature that had to be done on purpose.

The sky is not falling.

First, "FairPlay" DRM is something Apple was pretty much forced to include years ago through negotiations with the music industry. They later dropped FairPlay DRM completely (2009) for music purchased in the iTunes store.

Streaming is another matter and many streaming services use some form of DRM for those files you download to your device for 'offline' listening (when you have no wifi / internet connection).

Here's some better info on iCloud Music linked below.

OTOH there DOES seem to be some sort of corruption taking place, posted on July 6, 2015 at 12:42:40

From today's MacNN (Mac Network News):
The wide-spread nature of the corruption across a network share suggests that something involved with the iTunes update is the culprit, and not the NAS device hardware itself. While we're not done with our testing. . . we feel that our initial findings are important enough to disseminate now.

The bottom line: at this time, MacNN does not recommend storing iTunes libraries in any other location than on a local drive -- internal or external doesn't seem to matter, as long as the content is stored on the same machine as the iTunes application that uses the files as its library. We're not sure of the method of corruption, and we'll be examining closer exactly what happens as time allows.

Bad news. I'm sure they'll sort it out. Fortunately my library is local, not NAS. And I remain on an older version of iTunes with Audirvana +.

I inadvertently upgraded to 12.2.

No problems so far, as my flies are stored locally.

I was disappointed to discover the progress bar missing, but it has been replaced with a progress pie chart. To open, while ripping, click on the spinning ring in the upper right corner of the iTunes window.

Applications that used to run on our computers and devices increasingly run only on the developers' web sites. This "putting everything in the cloud" gives the developer complete control of the applications you use, and the content you create. It locks you in to paid software upgrades on their schedule. Adobe's suite of apps, for example, now only runs on their site.

In Apple's case, I'm sure one impetus for this is to reduce sharing. That would be a good thing if they actually paid the artists for their work, but at an average of $0.004 per song, they really don't.

It once again trashed my Apple TV's ability to access files on computer. No more Home Share. This is the second time this happened due to an update. Junk!

I know the sky is not falling with each version of Itunes. I also know I feel like I'm re-learning how to manage my library every year or so. Each new version is taking me AWAY from my music and trying to pull me towards ITunes cloud. I even dread figuring out how to manage my music on my Iphone!

I have lived with Itunes all these years and I am done. I just keep putting off the painful transition to JRiver as my current metadata is pretty near perfect on 2 tb of music. Custom album art on hundreds of live shows, etc. Converting formats, etc.. It is going to be very painful for someone of my limited tech/patience skills but that's how bad I want out of ITunes.

Maybe I could find someone to do it for me? Know of any candidates? That would probably be money well spent.
