As I mentioned earlier, my trusty 160GB iPod died. I loved that thing and wanted it repaired. I liked how it worked in the car and I liked the capacity. So, off it went to DigiExpress for a hard drive replacement. And there it sat. They couldn't get new drives and couldn't even begin to estimate how many more weeks beyond the six already in their care it would take. Meantime, they told me they'd stopped accepting 160GB iPods for drive repairs.

So, back it came to me - minus the two-way postage and $25 diagnostic charge.

I took the advice on this board to look for another shop. Two shops didn't reply to my voice mails/emails. A third said they would fix it, but they were currently out of new drives and didn't know when more would be in stock. Too, others were ahead of me in line, waiting.

Another alternative: instead of a hard drive, it was suggested that I go the SSD route. Great idea, but I couldn't find anyone who did that work. Maybe it's a DYI thing - if you know what you're doing. I didn't.

So, I did the next best thing. I ordered the Fiio X1 and a 64GB SD card. This thing sounds great - as good as if not better than the iPod- but the user interface is a little clunky compared to the ease of an iPod and loading music from iTunes. I'll "get" it with time and will probably graduate to a 128GB SD card when I spot one on sale.

It doesn't quite mesh with the car input the way the iPod did, but I have my on-the-go tunes again and I'm a happy camper.
