Not happy with either iTunes or XLD. I'm thinking of loading dbpoweramp on a Windows laptop ripping into ALAC and transferring to a Mac with thumbdrive. Is this possible?

Use a network transfer instead of a thumb drive.

A large library will take forever on a thumb drive.

I do it all the time, except I use .wav only. Sounds better.

I've enabled file sharing on the mac but so far the win 7 laptop refuses to see it. It would be so convenient if I can get it connected.

Try the converse. Share the directory with your music in it for read-only and see if you can pull it from the MAC.

That's the strange thing. When I first turned the mac on or shortly after I could swear that I saw the PC in Finder but I was preoccupied with getting connected to the modem. It wasn't there today when I looked.

It was easy to allow the mac but the pc refused to see it. I tried everything and finally after disconnecting the pc from the homegroup the mac appeared. The mac wants my pc password even though I don't have one so communication is one way for now. Works for me.

I'm learning a lot for an old dog, thanks to all the ones who helped me.

In order for your PC to be properly networked it needs a loging user name and password. Creat one and you should be ok.

I'm encountering a lack of success with cross platform network screen sharing probably due to my skill level though I have file sharing working.

I may try screen sharing with the iPad next.
