Hi, i have a small single bay cheap nas from Synology, mainly to experiment this approach.
I have almost no tech knowledge on pcs.
I see that Synology provides a Disk Station Manager ( is it a kind of OS ? link provided ) and also some specific applications to play-back music files.
Do you use one of these apps ? which one ?
Or do you use a windows application ? and which one ?
or maybe you dont use a pc but a streamer ? which one ?
My sistem is a win 7 pc, asus wireless router and Synology connected to the router.
Thanks a lot of any kind suggestion and advice.

Kind regards,
bg

I have just started using a Synology NAS.
I use the iTunes app and can access it from any computer with iTunes.

JRiver is able to access the files on the NAS with cover art (something iTunes doesn't seem to just yet)

I find that I can access movie files on the NAS using an Oppo Blue Ray player.

So far its working quite nicely.

Hi and thank you very much indeed for your helpful reply
Do you experience any difference in sound using iTunes or JRiver ?
I understand that it works ok but do you like the overall sound ?
Thanks again
Kind regards,

I have run LMS 7.7.3, which Synology provides, and it works fine. The diskstation doesn't have the power to serve high resolution files but it does fine on 44.1k and 48k files. I used this with a Squeezebox SB3. I have since moved to an old laptop converted to Lubuntu which can run later versions of LMS' successor, Squeezeboxserver and work with more files and processing.

Hi and thanks but i have to ask explanation ... i am quite ignorant on the issue. You say ...

" I have run LMS 7.7.3, which Synology provides, and it works fine. "

is this a SW for win 7 pc ?

" The diskstation doesn't have the power to serve high resolution files but it does fine on 44.1k and 48k files. "

I see. Well this is bad but i thank you for this "sad" but important information.

" I used this with a Squeezebox SB3. I have since moved to an old laptop converted to Lubuntu which can run later versions of LMS' successor, Squeezeboxserver and work with more files and processing.
Skip "

actually i would prefer to use a pc to stream the files stored in the Synology
I have already a dedicated pc to use it with the nas.
But as i said i have seen that inside the Synology Package Center is available a program called Audio Station that is a wav player and seems to sound fine to me
Have you tried it ?
Thanks again

Kind regards,
bg

Rather than quote your message, I'll just answer here:

LMS stands for Logitech Media Server which is the server software that streams to Squeezeboxes or Transporters via wired or wireless internet. Since Squeezeboxes cannot handle a sampling rate above 48khz, the server side software samples downward by taking every second or fourth sample to get to either 44.1k or 48, This downsampling is what seemed to be too much for my diskstation implementation.

LMS and the newer (non-Logitech) Squeesboxserver are available for Windows (XP,Vista,7,8), Mac, or Linux. They only work with rendering devices like
Squeezeboxes or Transporters, but things have opened up for the brave with an opensource package for computers serving as renderers. This is named Squeezelite, and has proven successful for a lot of people. It is not for those uncomfortable with digging a bit deeper into their computer's OS. It is a natural for a Linux user.

Your setup using the NAS as a fileserver only with the player/server/rendering software on other devices seems best to me and is how I plan to use mine going forward.

I have not tried Audio Station or Minim Server, another streaming package that I have heard works well on a Diskstation.

There are many ways to Roma.
To mention 2

1 DLNA
You can configure the NAS to act as a DLNA server (as the Synology also can play audio, it probably acts as a renderer to)
In this scenario all other DLNA compliant devices can browse the contents of the server and play it.
If the Synology also can play, DLNA compliant apps can act as a control point, telling the server what to play.
This is a nice and pretty popular solutions. A lot of devices today (TV, Android smartphones, Win)are DLNA compliant.
IMHO performance is a bit sludgy.
It is often a bit unclear how audio is send.
Just like USB, DLNA does device enumeration. Both know what the others capabilities are. Nice because everything play, not so nice, it might be that audio is down-sampled.
It is not easy to find out if this is the case.

This is the conventional way (NAS= Network Attached Storage)
All audio is stored on a share and the media player access it just like files stored on a local HD.
This allows you to maintain your collection e.g. tagging just like you do with data on a HD.
An obvious one is that this is a must, as you do have to maintain your collection.
Performance is in general crisp compared with DLNA.
You have full control as you can configure your media player to be bit perfect.
Obvious only devices able to connect to this share, can play the content.

I will go on like you recommend .. i am completely ignorant on OS mod or anything a little more than basic
By the way if you want to try Synology Audio Station you will find it in the Package Center
Thanks again

Hi and thanks a lot
I understand i have a lot to learn really
Now the nas is connected to an Asus 66 router
It is important to know that only Option 2 Share can give the best sound
But i will read carefully your advice and try to understand the basics
Thanks again
Kind regards,
