Hi there.

For those, who still enjoy (that includes me) the LogitechMediaServer and the related squeeze universe.

Revision 7.8.0 has been made available. (Building 7.8.0 has taken a couple of years after a more or rather less active development)

Even though announced by Logitech, they officially do not support the LMS7.8.0. Obviously unofficially they support (keep it alive) the server SW to a certain extent at least.
The funny thing: Logitech calls it "1. Community Supported Release".

Beside bugfixes, the most interesting features I find

1. "Add new scanner step to discover new/changed/removed standalone artwork for album covers"

In the past you had to clean and rescan the entire database
to get new cover-arts into the database.
This is IMO a valuable new feature for low-muscle servers, NAS/Arm-board based servers and rather large collections.

2. "Add Triode's LocalFile 'loc' ProtocolHandler support for squeezelite."

Basically you can run squeezelite - the streaming client - (Tridoes baby) on a server without using the
network stack. Now you can run server and client pretty efficient
on the same computer. Basically you just need one box.

Reference: LMS 7.8.0 now avialable

Enjoy.

Thank you! I also understand native DSD playback may follow soon, with out the need to convert to a FLAC container.

Yep.

You might try the 7.9.0 beta. There seems to be a plugin that just needs to be enabled.

Thanks. Downloading now. The death spiral of the off the shelf computer continues...

No plug in it seems, you just need to enable DSF/DFF in the File Types tab..but at this point it only now indexes them and displays in the browser, but no playback..yet.

Hi there.

First time I tried DSD on LMS and squeezelite myself.

I compiled the latest squeezelite-git (1.6.1) and ran it against LMS 7.9.0.

squeezlite needs to be compiled with cflags "OPTS=-DDSD ; export OPTS"

This way squeezelite -h will show a -D option and under Codecs -c you'll also find dsd. Premade squeezelite binaries (Rev 1.5) are also compiled with DSD support. I havn't checked them out though.

DoP will be enabled with "-D" option at squeezelite startup. The server then realizes that there is a DSD capable player connected.

7.9.0 seemed to have recognized the DSD128 files by default during the initial scan. I haven't applied any specific configurations.

TestEnv:
OPUS 3 DSD Showcase DSD128 .dsf tracks, on my TEAC UD-501 (hooked up locally to my server) feeding my Adam A5X.
My server runs Ubuntu Server-14.04 (just released), a 3.13 kernel and LMS 7.9.0.-beta-daily from 04/22/14

Result: It works. Quite nice.

There seem to be different options to

1. run DSD2PCM (converts DSD to native PCM -- server plugin?? (Haven't checked yet how this can be accomplished). This feature would be required for
DACs without DSD support and would probably go hand in hand with a sample rate converter.

2. DSD2DoP (puts DSD into PCM/flac framework). This mode seemed to work
out of the box on my .dsf files.

Note:

If you run DoP, your squeezelite player SW volume control will be locked automatically at 100% (you can move the slider, but nothing is gonna happen). The lock needs to be in place to avoid data corruption of the DoP (fake PCM) stream. Keep in mind: You need to have an analog volume control in place !!! Otherwise you might blow up your speakers (and ears) .

Very important:
A DoP stream needs to be delivered "bit-perfect" to the DAC. If you have any resampler, digital volumecontrol, dsp, pulseaudio, asf, in the chain you have to turn that feature off.

.
.
.

LMS and DSD. Had it on my action list for a while. Now it's ticked Off.

THX to those highly motivated folks who made this happen -- all free of charge.

Back to the real stuff -- 44.1/16 - straight PCM . ;)

Good luck. Enjoy.

Hey there. So far I have had no luck getting LMS to play DSD. The Sonore app to convert FLAC to FLAC for DoP does not work correctly, and I tried it in Foobar, and the DAC (yes, DSD capable) still thinks its 176.4 PCM). I have done everything correctly.

I am in no hurry. I have 50 DSD files in my library, so it is not a priority, However I will be doing my own DSD recordings. Native DFF support won't be too far away.

Thanks again for post about the LMS updates!

Hi.

I do not convert my dsd files at all. That's done on the fly.

Cheers

the DSD2PCM function is built into the binary for the Linux community project, but AFAIK nobody has run a build for any other platform with it included yet. I loaded the 7.9 beta for a few days and noted the new file types were enabled, but I am still trying to get squeeze lit to play again after a recent plugin update where I lost MP3 playback. I also had to go to the 32-bit binary for SL in OSX. I think Triode broke something in 1.6. Also, Triode has taken over the binary for DSDplay and will be building a plugin.

FYI, played back DFF files in a FLAC container through the SBT for the first time.

Nice.

The issue is there are very few if any programs to create compatible DSD FLAC containers for MAC, and I had zero luck with foobar on a windows machine. Finally used Vinyl Studio.
