Just curious to see what speaker cables users would suggest to pair with my fully upgraded Berning ZH270. Right now I'm using and happy with Goertz MI2 copper cables with my Harbeth Super5HL Plus speakers, but curious to other options.

With OTLs, I have found that speaker cables with low characteristic impedance work best. Among such cables is the Goertz ribbon type, or most any ribbon type cable. I use Goertz silver ribbons. Going silver might represent an upgrade from the copper, depending upon your personal taste. Other cables with low-ish characteristic impedance are MITs with termination boxes or Transparent with termination boxes. (The boxes usually add capacitance.) IMO, stay away from Nordost cables which tend to go for low capacitance, which usually results in very high characteristic impedance. I've tried two Nordost types with my Atma amps and both sounded terrible.

Characteristic Z = sq rt (L/C). So, if you can find out inductance and capacitance per foot, you can calculate CZ. However, the value of CZ is independent of cable length.

Lew,

Thanks for the thoughtful and detailed response.

Which Geortz silver speakers are you using? AG1? AG2? AG3? And did you upgrade from the copper to the silver? What improvements did you realize?

TIA,

Tim

I don't know which ones I have; they are about an inch wide, if that helps. I think they are the "middle" size. I confess that someone gave them to me; he did not want to take the trouble to sell them, and he replaced them with Maple Shade ribbons, which is another good choice. I think I did have the copper ones before that. I converted them into power cords. I would say I personally prefer the silver, but it's not a world of difference.

You could also ask David Berning if he has an opinion. He lives near me, is a very nice guy.

Lew,

Thought I saw in the archives here that you were impressed with the Analysis Plus cables with your OTL amps too?

I have no recollection of ever owning a pair of Analysis Plus speaker cables. Nor have I even ever heard of the brand.
