I'm putting together a switching system to share my one set of speakers between a Joule Electra VZN-80 OTL and an Exposure 3010 solid state amp.

I plan on using a Niles SAS1 switch.

However, I have a basic question about OTL safety. It is frequently stated that a tube amp should never be powered on without speakers connected, for fear of damaging the output transformer. Is there a similar danger to OTL amps?

Some OTLs are unstable without a load, just like some transistor and some transformer coupled tube amps. Our amps don't care.

In any case like this its a good idea to consult the manufacturer!

I checked with the official repair facility for Joule and they recommend always having some load attached. Better safe than sorry I guess!
