Was deciding between Wigglesworth and Petrenko, and went with the former.

I like W's way with Shostakovich, and the Netherland's Radio Symphony delivers. The conductor's interpretations I know, (the 4th and 11th), are sane yet in no way neutered, and BIS's sonics are sensational: weighty, deep, with incredible impact. Just listen to the machine gun bit, (snare, bass drum and gone) in 3rd mov't, or the bass drum thwacks underpinning the downbeats at the end of the symphony. Incredible.

(If only Mr. Bissie could have found Grieg Hall's corresponding sweet spot for Litton and the Bergen!)

I imprinted on Haitink's Decca 12th, then ventured into Russian territory with Mravinsky and Rozhdestvensky. IMHO Wigglesworth matches the Russians' intensity and energy in the "action" scenes. Reflective passages are handled with more than adequate sensitivity as well.

I enjoyed the BIS 12th thoroughly and didn't once feel short-changed by the non-Russian forces.

And did I mention the sound? : )

 at the Edinburgh Festival in '62, DDS himself, after having heard the premiere (finally!) of the Fourth and of the Twelfth, said that it seemed that his earlier works were apparently superior to his more recent compositions. Of course, he made up for it, and more, later that year with the Thirteenth. And many more.
