The latest issue of The Absolute Sound has a review penned by Arthur Lintgen (a relatively knowledgeable critic, IMO) of the Maazel VPO Sibelius cycle, which has been reissued on CD/Blue Ray Audio. Highly favorable review, both for performance and sound. I have the Maazel set on RTR tape, and a few of the releases on LP as well, and I certainly wouldn't criticize anyone who prefers this cycle, which was one of the best things that Maazel ever did. The VPO might not be the most idiomatic Sibelius orchestra, and the readings are a touch muscular, but very much worth hearing.

I'm not sure I know how to play BlueRay Audio - I have an Oppo BDP-105, but use it for movies and streaming. I have a Sony XA9000ES for silver disc music. Well, heck, the LPs sound great anyway.

The other notable item in this issue is the preview of the new Wilson WAMMs, which are priced at $650,000. (!) One of my stepsons saw the picture, thought they looked cool, and wanted to know what they cost. I asked him to guess - so he said $10,000. I didn't know the price yet, so I said he was off by a factor of 10....little did I know that I was, in turn, off by another factor of 6+

I hear that the production lines for all of these high-end products are full and sold out....who buys them?

This one?

Have you purchased it? Amazon sellers are asking a bit less than $30 plus media mail shipping of $3.99.

I think it's possible to play a blu-ray audio disc without a TV screen, posted on January 12, 2017 at 10:39:54

In the case of the Maazel set, where there's no multi-channel part of the disc, playback would default to two-channel (stereo). So it seems to me that you would just put the disc into your blu-ray (or universal) player and press play. Navigation between works and movements would be a bit of a chore however. It is easier with a screen, but I know many listeners eschew this convenience. ;-)

I got the Sibelius set because it was a much cheaper way to get the hi-res (96/24) files. (They are $90 at both HDtracks and ProStudioMasters!) I ripped the files from the BD-A disc onto my laptop, and they sound terrific. Plus, I've got the original BD-A as well as the CDs/booklet as a backup.

This one has just shown up on TIDAL's 'MQA' 'Masters' list, likely the reissue which was released as an SACD some time ago.

I should give it a listen.

The Oppo has both analog audio output, on RCA jacks, which you can patch right into your existing stereo system; or HDMI, which can be patched directly into an A/V receiver. It is when using HDMI that a video monitor may be needed. Some A/V receivers, when using HDMI, will mute if there is no video monitor in the circuit.

My main listening room is this Oppo feeding a Marantz 7.2 A/V receiver via HDMI My speaker configuration is 7.2, with height speakers as the added two to the main 5. Typically with discrete 5.0 material (SACD or Blu-ray Audio) I will use the Marantz's DTS 10 software, which extracts the height information from the 5-channel audio to send to the height speakers. The sound is wonderful, realistic, fabulous -- makes me very happy indeed.

Wow - sounds great! - I may want to investigate DTS 10 with height speakers myself, posted on January 13, 2017 at 19:20:27

Probably not until the summer however (when work dies down).

My Audio Note NOS CDP only plays Red Book. I'm not sure what I could do with my other setup (Mac + Itunes + A+ and a Nos Dac).

But the regular CD's are included in the set too, right? [nt], posted on January 14, 2017 at 12:50:19

I thought you were referring to 24/96 downloads, rather than the files on the blu-ray audio disc.

Whilst I've no particular interest in these (having bought Decca's autumn 'subscription' sets (1970-2: Beethoven/Dvorak/Sibelius) as a teen; one aspect that moderately interests me is whether the 24-bit format also reveals a qualitative superiority for the pre-Dolby issues (Dvorak7/8, Sibelius1/2) because, on LP, I always found Decca's 'smeared' Dolby-ized material to be verging on the unacceptable: - that system seemingly bringing-up acoustic information and 'gluing' the orchestra into that sound (or v-v) - whereas, particularly Dvorak 8 (SXL original - have all the above as various SXL's), one hears an orchestra playing/expanding within a defineable acoustic space. Indeed, this aspect was remarked-on by a HiFiNews/RR reviewer at the time of the Dvorak box (1971) - referring to Decca's 'zinc-tank acoustic' (ie: compared to Philips/Rowicki).
Possibly a mite too sophisticated as a query, here...??

Never bought anything like this.

Never noticed that, but I'll try to listen for it if I get the set - Thanks! [nt], posted on January 15, 2017 at 10:23:11
