So I recently returned to playing for one of the local flute teachers who has a lot of students at UC Berkeley. She just had a private recital of her students and was giving me a run-down on the students and the pieces each one was playing - she got to one name on the list and exclaimed, "Oh! This girl is a wonderful student, but she had to bow out of the recital because she had a conflict - she was in a beauty contest that night! Chris, I know you'll just LOVE working with her in the future!" Well. . . she's probably right. I also can't say that I disagree with the student's priorities in choosing the beauty contest over the recital!
