Thinking of pulling the trigger on Janson's Concertgebouw Mahler 8th. Any nays?

Listening to extended samples at eclassical and the 1st mov't sounds phenomenal, though the 2nd part's final chorus seems a bit yanked around, but only a bit.

Please indulge me and sample the final "alles percussionverbanglischaway" and tell me if it feels mannered. Nt, posted on December 1, 2016 at 11:20:50

Oh, come on, John. And by the way, what's wrong with the Kubelik/BRSO version of Mahler's 8th on DG? I admit I'm a fan of Jansons and wish he had accepted the NY Phil gig.

Sorry, my voice texting not that good. : ) , posted on December 1, 2016 at 13:07:43
Seriously, had nothing to do with the music or performance, just playing with words. Hope I didn't offend.

I know the Kubelik 8th well, great in-tune Soprano, but I'm not above seeking a sound spectacular once and awhile too, which the DGG is not.

I haven't heard the Jansons, but the best-sounding Mahler 8 I've heard (and it's a fine performance, too), is Michael Tilson Thomas/SFSO on a multichannel SACD.

OK, and no offense taken -- It was the funniest thing I saw today. nt, posted on December 1, 2016 at 16:34:50

Do the previews use Flash? I can't get them to play on either of my computers [nt], posted on December 1, 2016 at 18:39:01

I saw MTT do it live awhile back. Really like the conductor but it seems there's a sense of the "spiritual" , posted on December 2, 2016 at 07:11:26
missing from his Mahler. I'll have to try it again because the first time around, I listened to it on the heels of Tennstedt's.

The recordings from Davies are fantastic though, and his Mahler 6th SACD caught my ear in an audio store. It was the first time I'd heard an SACD and the rest is history!

The recordings from that hall back in the Phillips days were also good. I really like the sound quality on the new Debussy SACD. Some of the Mahler recordings were a little "swimmy" in surround sound, especially Mahler 1, but they got better.

I have heard Janson's Mahler 3 and 6 live in NYC. Both performances were magnificent. He is my go to guy for 21st century Mahler performances.

NYPO can be very unwelcoming with its viperish politics.

As far as multichannel Mahler 8s go, there are a couple of additional ones I suggest you give a listen to -- both are spectacular! One of the most musically satisfying, and a technically superb MCH recording, is Jonathan Nott and the Bamberg Symphony on a Tudor SACD. Live concert.

And hugely spectacular and impressively recorded is the Blu-ray disc with Gustavo Dudamel conducting just about every musician he could find in Southern California and Venezuela. He actually has close to 900 [!!!] performers, which is the largest group in modern times assembled to perform "Symphony of a Thousand". The multichannel is effective and the effect is overwhelming.

Can only download.

I've read a lot about Dudamel, but haven't heard any of his performances yet.

The Gramophone describes the Jurowski Mahler 2nd as one that finally touches all the bases. It's a bit expensive at the moment, since the Pound took a dive. Have you heard that one?
