As a long time fan of Bob Dylan's songwriting,I was glad to see this award, which the Swedish Academy was due for "having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition."

Dylan's Nobel Prize

I like Dylan but he has been accused of borrowing and taking credit for decades.

expect people with great artistic ability to be people of great morality, honor and integrity in their personal lives. They are two different things. Also, I was taught not to judge the morality, honor or integrity of someone I've never met face to face, and I've found that to be a very useful lesson.
I've read accounts of people who don't like Dylan personally, but I'll focus on his music and lyrics, which have had an impact on my life.

A well deserved and significant award to a brilliant musician., posted on October 13, 2016 at 16:19:12

His creativity is outstanding. Starting with his folk/rock in the '60's and then into alt country. If you've not heard and watched the video for "The New Basement Tapes" then you've missed out on a real musical treat. Wonderful lyrics from Dylan that were never recorded then given to some of our current wonderful musicians to write and record the music working collaboratively. The combination is just plain wonderful. Awesome.

Arguably undeserved. Writers need this more than he does., posted on October 13, 2016 at 17:06:30

His importance as a musician notwithstanding, this seems an unnecessarily quixotic decision.

The Nobel committee needs to keep their prize relevant and recognized as significant by as many as possible, and giving it to a major celebrity from time to time helps them in that regard.

Also, the main purpose of such a prize should be recognizing achievement, not being one itself and not bringing recognition to the unjustly underappreciated in the field or giving cash to an author who needs it, though those are worthy secondary purposes, in my opinion.

Dylan is decent song writer, maybe some sort of minor poet, but that's
about it. He can't sing, he can't play.

And, if Dylan is worth of a Nobel Lit prize, what must Willie Nelson
deserve - he can write, sing, and play, and his writing is on the same
plane as Dylan's.

Well, I don't pay much attehtion to these things anyway.

Listen to any "traditional" blues and you will discover that most every version is somewhat different, that lots of musicians "remake" songs. This is tradition and completely acceptable.

Totally in favour - songwriting is literature as well. , posted on October 13, 2016 at 23:49:08

You can't compare songwriting directly to poetry - it has to work with the music. But it is nevertheless a valid form of literature. It uses words - it has a message.

The thing about Dylan isn't his lyrics per se - there are more poetic songwriters. The thing about Dylan is he influenced a whole generation. His influence was massive, and around the globe as well as in the USA. He was truly a figure of his time. You could compare him with Solzhenitsyn, for instance, as a spokesman for a historically important epoch. That's enough for me.

Heartily agree although you can add an "s" to generation... N/T, posted on October 14, 2016 at 05:45:21

Just another concession to the great unwashed, (as if they don't get enough concessions in American pop culture already!).

It was for his Lyrics. Maybe it should have been for Poetry. nt, posted on October 22, 2016 at 11:12:05
