A new kid on the block who, IMHO, will be worth watching: Mariam Batsashvili. A 23 year old from Republic of Georgia and 1st prize winner at the 10th Annual Liszt competition in the Netherlands, she is a pianist of amazing technical proficiency and also of great, high minded musicianship. (Not a lot of banging going on here.) She's giving two concerts here in NYC this coming July, both of which I'm planning on attending. She is particularly superb in Liszt (whom, it appears, is her "god").

Republic of Georgia, that is.

Khatia Buniatishvili pictured above.

Pretty good pianist as well.

First they came for the dumb-asses
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a dumb-ass

Very true. I hope to see her here in Zankel Hall here in NYC this coming Dec. She'll be doing Pictures at an Exhibition, amongst other things.

Came across a performance by Mariam of Liszt's "La Campanella" on YouTube.... 95 percent of the performances of this work I don't much care for..... Mariam's happens to be in the other five percent.

Mariam was able to sustain the melodic line throughout the work, avoiding the piece to transform into a jumble of notes..... Which is to me a stunning achievement for this particular piece. A lot of famous pianists (Evgeny Kissin for one) fail to come close. Not quite the horsepower or articulation of the best I've heard (Kazune Shimizu), but for a young competition performer, off the charts.

Khatia Buniatishvili, like so many other young pianists around today, is technically proficient to an amazing degree. But, based upon some youtbe videos I've watched, such as the attached of the Mephisto Waltz, there is something lacking. She milks the music for every drop of excitement but, she misses the poetry (imho). And there is great poetry in the Mephisto Waltz, in addition to the bravura passages.

Of course, for the Mephisto Waltz, Jorge Bolet, in his Everest 1960 recording, when he was at the top of his game, is still the gold standard, at least for me - technical mastery coupled with great musicianship - bravo!

Bolet's Liszt on Everest (1960) - still astounding. Check out the Mephisto waltz here (unfortunately not the best transfer):

She is not on Tidal or Classicsonline because she only has one cd, a release of the Lizst competition.

That is quite true. And try buying it! You have to write them an email, and then, as I recall, they want you to send them a bank check - in euros (Did they never hear of paypal?). Anyhow, when she comes here to NYC for her two concerts it is to be hoped she will bring along a supply of the CDs for sale at the concert halls.

If she eventually makes it into the major league no doubt more CDs will be forthcoming. Hope to be hearing a lot more from Mariam.

Lisa Batiashvili, a darn' good violinist, despite a couple of misfires recently on DG (that Bach disc - ugh!) - also from Georgia:
