In fact it's close to gambling - gambling on your own afterlife and other peoples' lives....

...I see the street gang mentality as much the same. I'm not sure the leaders of these movements have the same disorder so much as they manipulate it in others.

Yes, and people with no chance of escaping poverty or who otherwise see no opportunity of doing something meaningful with their lives, and/or have no government or leadership they can believe in, are vulnerable to that kind of manipulation.
