As a flutist myself, I would be remiss if I didn't mention Jasmine Choi, the current hot young babe flutist (and worthy successor in that category to Sharon Bezaly) in the midst of Chris from Lafayette's endless parade of babe pianists, violinists and cellists.

Ms. Choi may not be the absolute numero uno when it comes to virtuoso pyrotechnics, but her musical instincts are very fine indeed. You can hear that in this clip, if you're not too busy trying to figure out how her gown doesn't split at the seams.

And she does play them well! Decades ago, when I did a lot of accompanying for flute players (including Frances Blaisdell's summer master classes), never a year went by when someone wasn't playing these works! What I like in Jasmine's performances are the extreme flexibility of tempo (something that Frances Blaisdell always encouraged in the pirces, especially the first) allied to expressive changes of dynamics and tone quality (which itself is also beautiful, as far as I can tell from uTube). And she of course avoids all the intonation pitfalls in these works. Brava!

However, boos and hisses to Jasmine for not identifying her excellent pianist! ;-)

As the photo below shows, Jasmine seems to have learned a lot from Yuja already! ;-)

I have to agree with all of that. Darn it., posted on June 18, 2016 at 11:17:37
First, kudos on remembering the great late Frances Blaisdell. And yes, the Schumann Romances are extraordinarily beautiful. And yes, the fine pianist should have been acknowledged.

. . . yes, Jasmine appears to have learned a lot (sartorially) from Yuja. ;-)

Don't know about that. Jasmine Choi is about 4 years older than Yuja Wang, and graduated from Curtis 4 years earlier, though they were there at the same time briefly (Choi 2002-2004, Wang 2003-2008). Do you think a 19-year old would be learning about fashion from a 15-year old? Do you have any daughters, Chris?
If this forum is going to be all about teen-aged girls, you need to learn some basics!

Touché - so was Yuja influenced by Jasmine???, posted on June 18, 2016 at 16:26:29

BTW, no daughters here - my wife sometimes feels overwhelmed by all the testosterone in this family - and, from time to time, she lets us (me and our two sons) know! ;-)

So if Jasmine was the influencer, I guess I can understand it.

So no daughters. Explains a lot. ;-) nt, posted on June 18, 2016 at 16:37:10

She's got a decent sound..... But not exactly a big or articulate sound. Appears to labor during demanding passages.

Jasmine plays mostly concertos transcribed from other instruments. For example, the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto transcribed for flute. (Won't comment on the performance.)

Below is Jasmine playing the final movement of Mozart's 2nd Flute Concerto..... Decent performance..... There isn't much on YT of her playing the standard repertoire for the flute.

Actually, she plays the standard flute repertoire one would expect. And flute soloists routinely play transcriptions of the Mendelssohn violin concerto these days, not just her.
To me she has a beautiful and, for the current era, an unusually characterful sound. But I agree that she isn't tops when it comes to virtuoso fireworks and can sound labored and muddled. You obviously went beyond the Schumann Romances I recommended and linked to.
For much more virtuoso facility, check out Denis Bouriakov. He is not a favorite of mine, but boy, can he ever whip through the Mendelssohn violin concerto, for example.
