Im impressed. Its on ABC too not PBS which is a little shocking. The first two numbers have quite impressive line up even Zakir Hussein on tablas. Im sure it will have a lot of pop jazz folks as Diana Krall is now playing but jazz on TV in prime time? Ill take it!

I was surprised to see Jazz on in prime time. I can't recall seeing so many Jazz performances in prime time since the death of the variety shows of the Golden Age of television. I would hope this would become an annual event like the Kennedy Center Awards. I would hope that if there are future repeats of the same that the time would be extended.

The performances were all stellar. However, the editing was somewhat disconcerting. In some cases the the performances were cut short for commercial timeouts. Overall, it was a welcomed change to the live prime time music performance to the likes of mediocre lounge acts (The Voice, American Idol, etc.). I can only hope with the advent of home theater we can see more quality musical performances in prime time.

I recorded the show and plan to watch it again. There was mention during the show that more was available online, but I haven't been able to find the performances via Google. When I have a chance to see the recording again I will post a message about online access.

I forgot the url for the site. I only saw one embedded video when I went. Watch the show again they mentioned the site at a commercial break.

There is an excellent Jazz scene in the greater D.C. area.

I did not enjoy it. There are so many better singers than Aretha. Diana Krall was pathetic as usual. I did not think the 12 year old was that good. And pray tell me what are guys like Sting and a blue suited guy doing at a Jazz concert. If they wanted a foreigner they could have brought the Canadian Joni. One cant please UNESCO all the time. And the blue suit guy and Sting singing Lennon is the limit. Why should there be a tabla there except to please UNESCO. Zakir H's father must be turning in his grave listening to this strange fusion. What happened to blues?

I agree with the overall tone of your post. Aretha and Sting at least know enough about the music to be respectful.

I have never been a Diana Krall fan, She did her usual ho hum performance. She did nothing exceptional, but didn't embarrass herself. However, the bass player was exceptional.

I questioned a number of the performers and why they were there. In the community I live in we have a community center, and the music director schedules two or three Jazz performances per year. Regretfully, the director seems to Google Jazz performers available for a specific date and then books them. They tend to be some of the most mediocre performers I have ever seen. It seems the only thing they have to do with Jazz is that they can spell the word. It looks like as if some of the White House Jazz performers fit in the same groove.

Nevertheless, there was Jazz on in primetime. Although, they may not have booked the performers I would have preferred, but there were top tier performers as well as up and coming keepers of the music like Espananza Spaulding. If the show is done again next year maybe there will be greater depth in the pure Jazz vein.
