Zubin Mehta is bringing the Australia World Orchestra to India. The most interesting thing for me is that the Soprano is Greta Bradman, grand daughter of my all time favorite cricketer Sir Donald Bradman. I may be able to attend at Chennai and perhaps get an autograph from her. Do Sopranos give autographs I wonder. Anyway this is the closest I can get to a Bradman. They will be performing Mahler and Stravinsky.

Cheers
Bill

I was once chairman of the governing board of a New Zealand high school. The principal approached me one day and, knowing of my interest in cricket, showed me two ancient bats given out each year as prizes to the best school players. I was amazed to see the signatures of all of an Australian mid-1930s test team, including the authentic signature of Sir Donald Bradman, on one of the bats, and the signature of the legendary Victor Trumper on the other. I told him the bats would be worth thousands of dollars on the sports memorabilia market, so now they reside in a safe deposit vault and are only allowed out for display purposes.

Last year I visited the Southern Highlands area on New South Wales and made a point of visiting and photographing the modest cricket ground at a little town called Bowral. This is sacred soil - Bradman started his unparallelled cricket career there.

Greta Bradman recently sang in New Zealand and her performance was favorably reviewed. She will be well looked after by Zubin Mehta. I once made the acquaintance of several members of a most prominent orchestra he frequently guest conducted and they had nothing but praise for his work with them. What they had to say about another of their frequent guest conductors, Leonard Bernstein, was much less charitable and does not bear repeating here.

Zubin Mehta told the Press that he auditioned Greta and found her good. Also Zubin is a Bombay guy and hence cricket crazy.

After the end of the highly successful Ashes tour of England by Australia in 1948 under the captaincy of Bradman, I wrote a letter to Bradman simply addressing him as the Cricket Captain, Australia. Two months later I got a letter from him with a smiling picture of his, signed over by him. I remember my whole school coming home to see the picture. I was a great hero. The picture was with me till late 1960s when it was lost during the many moves.

I remember listening to the running commentary of the last day of the Leeds test of 1948 when Bradman and Arthur Morris put up a great partnership to score 404 to win the test. We young boys had special permission to stay up late till 11 PM.

Best Wishes
Bill
