Due to Mr. Marx's pursuasive influence, I'd buying the Stanford Stabat Mater.

The only problem's that it seems to only be available on red book cd, even tho Chandos's website indicates that it's a 24/96 recording from 1995.

It's not available as an HD download from HD Tracks, and I haven't been able to find an SACD, or DVD-A release of it.

Here's my question: for a company that positions itself as providing advanced digital sound, why don;t they make hi rez downloads of their catalog available, or produce hi rez discs, such as SACD's or DVD-A? They got tons of titles I'd love to buy if I could get them in hi rez.

I'm going to buy the red booky Stanford, but it'd much better to have a hi rez copy.

Also, John Marx is dangerously pursuasive, and may use some form of hypnosis [and/or logic].

I bought a RB copy and it is excellent both sonically and musically.
It sounds better that some of my SACD's
SACD is only a format and does not guarantee excellence.

SACD's and DVD-A are both dying mediums. In a very short time you will not be able to buy either. The future of music is streaming. Try Tidal or Classicsonline HD LL. You will be surprised at how great they sound. If you have a really good dac you will find out how gread 16/44 can be

. . . as was mentioned over at vinyl asylum here, in 2020, there will no doubt be a "CD Revival" (kind of like today's vinyl revival!). Then, about 2025, there will be a DVD-Audio and SACD revival, with DVD-Audio morphing into a blu-ray audio revival in 2030 - which will lead to a format war revival. This format war will be resolved by the Download revival of 2035. All of these revivals will be led by Michael Fremer! ;-)

Meanwhile, everyone else will be streaming away in lossless and hi-rez! ;-)

Listen for the music. *Really* listen - get to know the piece. A great performance of a great piece can carry you away, even if the recording is awful. If you do this, you'll certainly find some really great recordings, which adds to the fun, but great sound will never take you to a wonderful place. A great recording will never bring tears to your eyes, but a great performance can, even at home.

When listening to a great work, the more you learn about it, the more powerful it can be for you. Start reading scores, learn some music theory, and when you hear a masterpiece it will become *lots* more powerful, not less. Music is unique because the more you know about how it's done, the more magical it becomes.

Really bad/noisy recordings take some adjustment. I've got a 1955 Traviata with Callas, DiStefano, and Giulini, on a private label LP. Horrible recording in every way. But if you let yourself relax and adjust to the lousy sound, that performance can be transformative.

In this particular case, the sound is probably pretty good, and Hickox may be wonderful with it. Get it. I also have to agree with jazz1 - redbook CD *can* be very good.

Enjoy.

In 2020 it will still be the vinyl revival still leading the way....

Is that why the old record houses(now part of conglomerates) are nearly 'giving way' those huge 50 boxes at $1.75 per cd. and still make 1000% profit...Royalties unpaid.
