Got the LP version of Vol. 1 and it purports to include the Hi Rez Download, whatever that might be, from Audite.de.

Still no idea who pressed it but the DMM Disk cutting was done at Pauler Acoustics in Northeim and it was 'Made in Germany'.

Will be spinning it later this afternoon.

We all know it's a very good recording as proven to me anyway by the QOBUZ 16/44.1 Lossless FLAC streaming version but the vinyl copy does not measure up.

Just bought a Reference Recordings LP pictured above at the California Audio Show. As revelation as to what a modest Rega RP-6/JICO MM-1 setup can do.

There is no comparison.

Now I gotta get the Grieg set on SACD and settle this once and forever.

And what about the olfactory aspect? You didn't mention that. It's all part of the total sensuousness of the vinyl experience - where all your senses become engaged! ;-)

That slightly moldy smell I get when I pull out some of my old vinyl is almost like foreplay (well, not really) along with looking at the artwork.

or at least did they put on 24/96 file?
How bad is it?
Any production defects?

How about the performance?

I've the original Oue's HDCD and the sound even on a CD is very good but unfortunately this isn't my favourite Firebird.

The AUDITE Grieg Vol. 1 LP is the one that is no better or even not as good as the QUOBUZ 16/44.1 Lossless FLAC stream.

The Reference Recording Stravinsky LP pictured above is OUT OF THIS WORLD GOOD!!!

That makes 2 votes so far for the lacklustre sonic impression. ( IIRC, ahendler in the original thread mentions he prefers sony CD over this vinyl release )

But how's the performance?

So I'm listening to the FLAC 24/48 plus I get 16/44.1 WAV and MP3 downloads as well.

1 Gig total and a month to figure out where to put it all on my laptop.

I actually LIKE this particular version and still intend to get all four as SACD.

Then I can compare SACD, Lossless FLAC 16/44.1 Streaming, MP3, 24/49 FLAC and CD

I'd say the Symphonic Dances seem much better recorded and played both on the LP and on the 24/48 download.

So should I buy the #2 LP and hope for a free download as well?

Nah, I think I'll just spring for the SACDs.

It also minimise a possible production glitch on a vinyl.

And certainly cheaper than a vinyl.

18$ plus 4$ shipping isn't bad but still SACD is 13 bucks at Amazon. digital is much cheaper than vinyl.

At least, that's what I've read elsewhere. Higher sampling rate, planets properly aligned, etc.

I have not yet verified this myself, but I plan to purchase Vol 2 for a comparison.

This might also be a case of hi-rez fidelity surpassing that of older technology. Not looking to start a debate, but hey, it could happen. Might be time for the vinylsaurs (Reg TM) to watch for asteroids.

Peace,

successfully downloaded the MP-3 and 16/44.1 wave file and they say all of my attempts are used up and you only get 5.

Why people mess with downloading file I have no idea.

You know, LP vs. CD vs. SACD vs. OOBUZ stream vs HiRez download vs. whatever.

I have the LP and have streamed it on QOBUZ and originally intended to purchase the SACD when I first steamed it and....

I also love the vinyl experience but I find I am really enjoying streaming which basically has nothing but the music although going through thousands and thousands of albums to find something I want to hear is very much like the old days of going to Rose records in Chicago and spending a whole afternoon digging thru the vinyl to find something you wanted

Better the performance, crappier the fidelity. that's how it works with Richter.

But I keep searching in vein that elusive better sounding pressing amongst the pile of poo...
I finally got a quiet acceptable Live in Sofia LP after going through half a dozen.

He did a series of recordings for Phillips that were done on pretty modern equipment. They are rare studio recordings. Excellent sound

This Schubert sonata live recording is just excellent in both performance and sound.

Liszt Piano Concertos, or Shosty's Preludes and Fugues are ok, too but I noticed the sound quality is not always consistent.

These Beethoven sonata pieces go right back to the cave man era recording.

Later, JVC Japan captured a few live performances in wonderful early digital! ( they sound more natural than dreadful DG's 90s 4D recording ) With its ultra low noise floor, it is hard to believe this is a live performance ( IIRC, well behaved Japanese audience ). Realistic tonal colour and ambiance. If only this was possible for his earlier Eastern European tours 30 years prior...

. . . I'm of course relying on my nostalgic recollections of when I was a young(er) whipper snapper. As for listeners' olfactory experiences with LP's, Hollywood ought to make a movie about it - they could call it, "Scent of an Album" and put Robert De Niro in the lead role. ;-)

And you're right about present-day streaming services - they ARE a bit like flipping through albums at a B&M record store, except that one saves the travel time, and, perhaps, takes it for granted. ;-)

Most if not all were collected after I got seriously into the hobby say 15 years or so ago, and most were purchased used. As a result, my music collection is more focused by recording quality than music/musician quality, so to speak.

That, plus what was available in the classical music bins at Randy's Records in Salt Lake City! ;-)

I can say with certainty that SOMEONE living in the area of Salt Lake City was a Lazar Berman fan 'cause I ended up with a load of his LP's, all purchased at Randy's!

Not as prickly as Richter but his presence is felt from the very first note casting a large burly projection. Excellent clarity and determination with warm fleshed out notes. One of the most masculine breathtaking rendition of this piece but not the most inward searching. This mid 70s pressing has a high tape hiss noise but clear piano tone and absence of break up or distortion. Decent frequency extensions and bass dynamics for Columbia pressing.

I've a few more of his records but haven't listened to them yet.

Thank you for sharing your record store story.
Here's one of my vinyl store I frequent, Dave's Records in Chicago. ( he usually does not talk as much)

I purchased a few audiophile grade classical music but they soon were gathering dust until one day I got the Toscanini's Beethoven Symphonies box set at a local resale store for 60 cents. I ended up listening to the whole cycle in one evening in spite their poor fidelity.
