Wow! I forgot about Julie

Found a replacement for a noisy copy. Never thought I would find an excellent..period mono, no less! Best $7 buck find lately.

If you don't already have this Ella album, her version of CMAR is fantastic. Hearing it from the woman the song was written for, makes you stop whatever you're doing if you're not already listening.
Ella's album is also a period mono and 5 years "younger"1960.

Both of these albums should not be heard on CD and ONLY on a mono press!

Is it really so famous that it goes by its initials?

It's more lazines, than anything. CMAR= " Cry Me A River" figured most know of Julie because of it. Every diva of the period and perhaps some current I'm not aware of have recorded it.A few pull it off. Imelda May w/Jeff Beck is maybe the best modern performance I've heard.

for 7 years. Webb was to have had one of the best jazz record collections and had a great sound system. Julie was first to do CMAR in '55

That Ella album is one of her absolute best. I've got an "audiophile gold"
cd version of it, and the sonics are spectacular.

I did a wiki on Julie. She and Jack had a history. Very interesting.

You MUST get "let No Man Write My Epitaph" if you don't have it already.
The great thing about that album is its just Ella and piano.
I bring a period mono to shows and play "Black Coffee" which NEVER fails to amaze all listeners.

Judith Owen does a pretty great rendering of CMAR too...//nt, posted on July 24, 2015 at 10:34:58

"Bout twenty years ago I went to a record sale at a collector's house. A bit OCD, he had a massive collection of Presley including every album he ever recorded. He knew the value though so I could only buy a few.

But he also had a complete Julie London collection. Not ony a copy of every album she recorded, but also the stereo and mono copies, as well as alternate covers and such. I was so impressed with the effort he put forth I purchased the entire set.....

Always cool to find those types of collectors.
I'm obsessive about trying to obtain a 1st pressing of anything. Even better when I find them at the yard sale where the owner could care less and sells a stamper for 3 bucks!

The album I picked up is the black label which I suspect is a 2nd run? Do you have the blue label? Mine is a VG+ copy with just a few random stiches. It has that rare hypnotic effect some diva albums(Ella,Billie) seem to project. As the back cover notes mention-" Julie had a voice that says, come hither".

I bought the collection and it lies somewhere in my storeroom. AS I have some 40K LP's, hard to say what have, although I do have multiple coppies of Julie is My Name. It's unfortunately at the bottom of a pallet!

And like you, I get obsessed with finding first pressings or as close to them as I can, hence I have many multiple copies. Somehow, to my ears, first pressings seem to sound better.

I still run into this guy at sales and swap meets. I remember once I was looking at another London LP and he looks over and tells me that that copy is in better shape than the one he sold me ! This was 15 years after he sold the collection to me !

He had to sell because of a divorce, and last I checked he was collecting Nancy Wilson. As he says "common and cheap, but enough of a challenge"

I have it. It's great. Paul T Smith on piano, one of the under-rated
greats, and her accompanist off and on for 30 years. Haven't played it
in a while though - will do so soon.

This British release is an odd ball mono from the 80's of Ella's early Decca work. It too is only piano-Ellis Larkins. Really nice. Its on CD
as "The Decca Years" Check it out, if you haven't already.

I forgot she was Dixie Mccall on Emergency!
At least you would look forward to your next blood pressure check if she were your nurse.

I've not heard that one. Ellis Larkins was one hell of a piano player,
however, and was well favored as an accompanist by good singers. I'm
sure it's good stuff.

Larkins has a disc in the Concord records "Live at Maybeck" series and it's
very well worth having.

Ages ago, of course, they had a feature on deceptive record covers.

In big letters JULIE, then in small letters smith and she comes from and then big letters LONDON.

And of course there were others long lost to memory.
