Like him or not, Horner has been an influential soundtrack writer. He works with Sean (sp?) Murphy, IIRC, who is quite an audiophile using Wilson speakers for his monitoring.

A question.

I am wondering what other contemporary soundtrack composers others find interesting. I personally find the music of Rachel Portman quite interesting and varied....

His Godzilla score was excellent.

Check out Spanish composer Roque Banos. His score for 'The Machinist' is a must have for any Bernard Herrmann fan - it's an amazing pastiche.

Not unheard of in Hollywood.
A few scetches, leave the rest to their orchestrators.

A lot of film composers have others orchestrate for them. This is done mainly because of th time constraints. Sometimes a whole film score is done in 3 weeks

Nino Rota - I especially enjoy a compilation of his film works by Muti. As a bonus, if you become inclined, is that he has a body of good classical works all of which are assessable.

Then there's David Raksin, who had to come up with a theme for "Laura" over a weekend or bow to director Otto Preminger's wish for a by-then stereotyped "Sophisticated Lady." Not a bad result for a rush job.

IIRC, Zimmer teaches composition somewhere in LA. His studensts include Ramin Djawadi, the cmposer for Game of Thrones. Zimmer I am not as impressed with but I feel that Djawadi shows great promise..'

Of coure YMMV and FWIW.

Game of Thrones has several You tube videos, Djawadi uses some exotic instrumenation and his music is quite interesting ( I viewed some all brass choirs)

Also in the case of Zimmer, somewhere I read that he has his students compose parts of the soundtracks he is credited for as part of the learning and teaching process.
