Cleveland Orch. principal trumpeter puts forth a world-class performance of the Haydn Trumpet Concerto....

The accompaniment is the Santa Monica High School (CA) Wind Ensemble.... I think it made him play the instrument "louder" than he would have with a normal orchestra, but kept the tone nonetheless.... One of the better performances of the Concerto on YouTube.

But I'm a little puzzled as to putting this forth as a notable version. The high school kids do a nice job, but really?

This season he did a fabulous job in the Shostakovich Piano Concerto #1 (Trifonov) and in his solos in Petrouchka (Malkki conducing).

Oh, and I forgot to mention that he was part of a small group of Cleveland Orchestra players at the airport to celebrate Jet Blue's first flight out of CLE.

There are so few really good performances of the Haydn Trumpet Concerto.... I don't care if one of them happens to be with what you might deem an "oddball" accompaniment.

There are only two performances of the Haydn Concerto Concerto on YouTube I like better.... One is on an "oddball" instrument (keyed trumpet), the other is an awful recording (link).... I guess you can't have everything.

I think Mike Sachs did a great job of getting through it with atrocious accompiament. He had to play loud to set time and pitch center. On trumpet it could be the kiss of death trying to match a nebulous pitch center. He is a top orchestral player and would love to hear him play it whith his orchestra. A good concerto should allow for nuance and sophistication of phrasing as well as virtuosity. That is impossible without an equally musical orchestra, much less one just trying to get through it on wind instruments. 4 tubas! Wow.
