Going through the bought-but-never-played pile I pulled out the album below
I have just discovered Henry Cowell's String Quartet #4 (United Quartet) performed by the Composers String Quartet. What a marvelous piece of music, the use of oriental elements makes for an unique piece, different from the other American composers of that time.

What other works by Cowell should I investigate?

TIA

Cowell wrote a lot of music for many different types of ensembles. His canon is really quite diverse stylistically. I don't think I've ever heard any of his string quartets. I do recall a very pleasant piece for string orchestra of his called "Hymn and Fugueing Tune" I used to have a copy of on cassette. I've only heard maybe half a dozen Cowell pieces, but it's hard to pin Cowell down to a specific style. If you like the writing in the quartet, take comfort that there are lots of other works out there to explore. So far, I've found all of them to be worth hearing.
