but to my ears this is a pretty good take on the Symphony 4.

And obviously Hi Rez to boot!

He seems to be a fine Schumann conductor...... He does a magnificent Schumann Three as well.

Schumann 4 is a beast to get right - the melodic figures in the first movement are painfully repetitive and not that interesting anyway. Bring out the wrong lines and the whole movement is a bore, or even unlistenable. You really have to "make it work" by sheer balance of parts, dynamics and ingenuity. Jarvi does a terrific job in the 3rd - top of my tree - so here's hoping.

Up to date the versions I'm liking, and that turn the first movement into something like music are:
Philharmonia/Klemperer 1960 – fiery version unlike slower 1-3, dated sound -

Cleveland/Dohnanyi – good, lively and characterful
NDR/Wand – very good - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWcHVM6oLTA
Philadelphia/Levine – very nice, sunnier/lighter, good bounce (avoid 2003 RCA 2+4 coupling – get later full set)
Detroit/Paray mono
Swedish Chamber Orchestra/Dausgaard – nice small band, very clean

Klemp is the champ in this - an extraordinarily skillful reading which shows everyone else how it can be done.

Agree.... Klemperer for Schumann 4............, posted on January 18, 2015 at 15:27:26
