Very sad though not unexpected. What an amazing musician and huge influence on so many. Unfortunately, many fundraisers will now be memorials, but much to memorialize of course.

I remember doing a gig with him in 1967. We had a very good quartet at Oxford University - Pat Crumly alto, Brian Priestley pno, Spike Wells drs and me on bass. Spike used to invite all the best London players. I remember his lovely tone and wonderful improvising ability.

Advice to jazz fans:

If you don't have some of his stuff, git it.

Plenty of ECM and something unique, the Pepper Adams live date he did, Live At Fat Tuesday's.

Sadly, it seems to be more frequently than that, e.g., this past week it was Joe Sample, Gerald Wilson and Wheeler. Perhaps not all technically in the same week, but too many in such a short period.

I inadvertently left Jackie Cain, one of my favorite singers, off the list. Even though she might not be considered by some to be a jazz great, she was at the very least a great saloon singer.

She was a pioneer with her husband, Roy Kral.

My gosh, that is exquisite. Thanks so much for sharing.

Came to the KW party a bit late (heard What Now? playing a local music store a few years back), but enjoy his work. Now another 'piece' to add to the list.
