Great tenor. Never heard him live, unfortunately, but I have many of his recordings. We were fortunate with tenors in the 50s and 60s - Bjoerling, di Stefano, del Monaco, Corelli, McCracken, and Vickers (who was surprisingly good in the more lyric roles associated with some of the others) - but Bergonzi was as good as any, and unique. I'm not sure there was anyone better overall for Verdi (except for Otello) than he, and as far as Puccini goes, he was spectacular in the EMI Butterfly with Scotto and Barbirolli.

for the just beautiful work on his recording of "La boheme" with Renata Tebaldi. A terrific singer.

They probably just upped the price for this album at Amazon:

A new copy is now $2,997. What the seller thinks the market will bear now!

Used, but played in entirety just a few times. Wonder if I can get $1,999.00 for it? Nope, not parting with it.

Strange what a difference in price there is between new and used copies on Amazon - New: $2,997, Used: $36 (at least that's what's up there right now). Collector fetish for the "pristine new" at work! ;-)

Have it on vinyl. nt, posted on July 28, 2014 at 11:35:40

Used has popped up to $82. You can find the vinyl cheaper.

Listening to this now - recorded in 1975 (or at least released then) which made Bergonzi 51 at the time. Listening to it now, and while enjoyable can't help but wish that that it had been made about 10 years earlier. There is a bit of unsteadiness in some of the singing. Still recommended. Domingo did the same survey (and maybe added some - his set takes 4 CDs to Bergonzi's 3) - while I haven't heard it, I am certain, based on my exposure to other Verdi sung by Domingo, that my consistent preference would be for Bergonzi, except in the later operas.

Carreras, in his early years, was perfect for early and middle Verdi - too bad that he succumbed to the pressure to move to the heavier roles.
