But SOME might disagree!

I've heard that recording, posted on July 17, 2014 at 17:08:41

And despite the fact that I'm just on a different musical wavelength from him almost all the time, DB plays the Moonlight on that recording very well indeed! Ivan Moravec had some nice things to say about it too, as part of a public lecture he gave about interpretation and performance at Stanford many years ago. So. . . sorry I can't insult you for your taste in this instance! ;-)

I wonder just how long it took the person writing the blog to dig up the slowest, most turgid performance of the Moonlight that he could find, just to make a point. Digging around on YT, Kempff and Horowitz popped up and they don't play it all that much slower than Schiff.

The form of the piece isn't really that unusual, there are plenty of similarly built pieces. The Saint-Saens G minor concerto comes immediately to mind. I have never been able to get out of my mind that quote describing the Saint-Saens as starting out like Bach and ending like Offenbach. Can't remember who said it, I'm sure you do.

The guy can play Bach. But it seems he plays everything else like he's playing Bach.

Maybe - but I don't think he plays Bach with the damper pedal down through a whole movement [nt], posted on July 18, 2014 at 09:09:47
