I've embarked on a project to put all my cds into plastic sleeves and in
the process of course I'm going thru my collection one discset at a time.
Today I did the "Jones" section, and I'm astonished at how many great
Joneses there have been: Elvin, Thad, Hank, Etta, Papa Jo, Philly Jo,
Sam, Eddie, and others. But I was particularly struck with just how many
discs I have by Hank Jones that are simply marvelous. Here's a few of my
favorites: "Bop Redux", on Muse; "The Essence" on DMP; "In Japan" on All
Art; "Live at Maybeck" on Concord. There are others, only very slightly
less stellar. And, it seems that many of Hank's best feature the great
George Duvivier on bass. I can particularly recommend "In Japan", but
you likely can't find it. If you do, snag it.

Also of particular note in the "Jones" section of my collection is Etta
Jones' "Don't Go to Strangers" which is, quite simply, one of the best
female vocal jazz albums ever, and Papa Jo Jones' "The Main Man" which
features him (naturally) and a great group of Norman Granz' regulars of
the 70s.

Lack of skill dictates economy of style. - Joey Ramone

His late '50's and early '60's Capitol records were a hoot (literally), with fun arrangements, and super album jacket covers.

His "I Dig Chicks" won a Grammy, and likewise, that LP jacket photo is a classic.

I have a friend - John Taylor - who used to play bass with Michael Garrick. In the UK at the same time were John Taylor the drummer and John Taylor the somewhat more famous pianist. Since he moved to Norway he never realised his life's ambition to put together -

The John Taylor Trio:

John Taylor - piano
John Taylor - bass
John Taylor - drums

Interesting about the trio, but how does John Taylor connect to the Joneses?

Thanks, now I understand why you posted it.

A jazz Jones that comes to mind is Quincy Jones.
