never thought I would do this but I heard a class D amp - of all things - that sounded KILLER with the LRS

The " NAD M22 "

1) very good dynamics with deep extended bass ( for a LRS of course )

2) vocals sounded amazing - tube like - or actually OTL like

3) did not have the nasty strident class D treble of some digital amps

4) good three dimensional sound stage

5) instrumental timbres sounded correct - particularly Trumpet which I play a little

all this in a package that can be purchased for around 2 grand used

(as a ref I own the LRS myself and have tried a number of other amps so I am not just talking out of my arse )

Davey - any commnets or criticisms - once again - on this thread ?

The current crop of class D modules from Hypex, Purifi, etc. is hard to ignore. With proper implementation there's a lot to like about these amps.

Many of these modules can deliver very high power into low impedance loads without breaking a sweat, so no heat (wasted power) to speak of, light in physical weight, compact size, lower cost, extremely good specs on a test bench. Some of the mono blocks can literally fit in palm of your hand. What's not to like?

There's so much in audio that's subjective and I think that plays a big role in the lackluster reception that class D amps seem to receive. As with many things in audio, the early implementations of the technology needed some work, but I believe now class D is a serious contender to be top in class if the subjective element is removed from the evaluation.

I've been considering trying a class D amp myself. My cervical spine just can't handle dragging around 100 pound slabs of heatsink and transformers any longer.

They're not that big!

Criticisms? Nope, I've been listening to pretty much the same amplifier for a number of years now. (In my two-channel setups.)
An NC500-based restomod DIY version.

I will nitpick if you want me to.
Class-D amps are not 'digital' amps. This is a silly audiophile misunderstanding that's been going on way too long now.

When I had LRSes, I used a pair of PS Audio M700 monoblocks to drive them. When I traded the LRSes for a pair of 1.7s, I continued to use the M700s, and still do. In both cases, these amps drive both these speakers with supreme ease and I can find no fault with them nor any reason to "move up".

I can highly recommend good quality class D amps, such as PS Audio. I have not heard other manufacturer's class D product.

You beat me to it. Class D is analog. It's unfortunate that it's called class D in a digital world. And the only reason it's class D isthat was the next class after class C(not an audio worthy class).

I had one of the first tripath 2020 amps sold in the united states - years before Davey got his class D amp

I know its not digital - that was a term coined years ago when they were first available in the US

I am talking decades ago : }

News flash: I had Class-D amps previous to the one I use now. (In fact, I still have most of them.) My multi-channel UcD180 amp I still use often.

I got rid of my N88 amp years ago though. A crazy amplifier!

If you knew they weren't "digital" why did you call 'em that? :)

Class-C was never designed for audio application. High efficiency into a specific load for RF applications, primarily.

I'm not sure most audiophiles realize how far back Class-D amplifiers date. They were introduced even before I was born......and that's saying something! :)

was the Infinity SWAMP designed by John Ulrich (later of Spectron) in about '76 when JWC had one in house for review.

Not ready for prime time then. ;)

I used a similarly powered Ncore amp in the garage for a while, posted on April 9, 2023 at 12:31:21

Great bang for buck amp. Top end transparency wasn't in same league as rest of range but nice sounding overall.

sounds like they drained the swamp ....... n/t, posted on April 9, 2023 at 12:51:39

I think of Class-D audio amplifiers kinda like fuel-injection systems for cars. They've been around for many many years, but only recently sorted out pretty well.

says he likes it and especially the room correction software. Looking forward to hearing his rig one of these days.
