Thought this sounded like an interesting add on product for people needing more high frequencies. Their previous models were not dipole like this one.

"Aperion Dipolar Air Motion Transformer (AMT) Tweeter
Six position crossover selector - Off, 8KHz, 10KHz, 12KHz, 14KHz, 16KHz
Six position attenuator selector - 0dB, -1dB, -2dB, -3dB, -4dB, -5dB
Aluminum Alloy enclosure
8KHz - 35KHz rated frequency response
96dB sensitivity

I have an earlier version of this, works like a champ and sounds good. But could not defeat upgraditis so I replaced them with a pair of Townshends which have their own little custom stands for ESL 57s.

I wonder what it is, exactly, that gives the ESL-57 their less-than-wonderful treble sound?

Their treble has been described as "plasticky" - not sure exactly what that means, but it somehow does seem appropriate. But what DOES it mean? Plastic doesn't ring, and is generally quite well damped... so are we missing the "sheen" of some tweeters (ribbons come to mind) that is actually a coloration?

???

The ESL-57 actually has good measurable HF response, low THD and decently low energy storage / good transient response. Is it maybe the HF radiation pattern that gives rise to some dissatisfaction with the treble? Yes it is VERY directional, but even in a laser-aimed sweet spot, it's not quite what I want to hear in terms of treble.

I'm thinking that maybe some spatial aspect of the treble output just doesn't "present" right in 3D space in a room....? Power response in a real-world listening room is dependent on radiation geometry....

I just don't know. I like my ESL-57's but like many listeners over the years I feel some kind of "different treble" would make them more enjoyable.

Its not less than wonderful within its limits. ESL 57 treble is superb, sweet, lots of air...it just does not go the stratosphere. I am actually happy listening without the Townshends, but they do add some stratospheric sound stage cues, etc.

I just purchased a paif of Aperion planar super tweeters to accompany my Wharfedale Linton's. I did so hoping for just a bit more spaciousness, and it seems to have worked.
