Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had first hand experience with these two models and could give their thoughts on the differences.

I owned 1.6s for about eight years and am very familiar with them but I sold them about two years ago to convert my music room to a billiard room. I'm probably going to change this space back to a music room again at some point in the not too distant future. The price of the LRSs is very appealing but I'm wondering if I'd be disappointed after having the 1.6s.

The closest dealer is about 2.5 hours away and I'm not sure they would even have LRSs to demo. I am going to call and ask though.

My room is something like 24x16

Thanks,

Joe

but with a room of that size, if possible, you might want to consider a used pair of older 3.xR series. The true ribbon tweeter is a wondrous thing. The TR is to the QR what a good HDTV is to a good SDTV. I went to my (used) 3.6Rs from a pair of "Gunn'ed" 1.6s (originally bought stock), and there was no going back.

Interesting; I changed my billiard room into a music room, and it was the best thing I ever did for listening - there's nothing like having a dedicated room. I don't have the exact experience you are looking for, but I went from an MMG to a 1.7 in that room, and the change was revelatory; better in all ways, and not by a little, Enjoy the journey!

I couldn't agree more about the 3 series as I've aspired to it for many years. I don't have an issue buying older pre-owned gear. I bought my 1.6s as demos directly from Magnepan through a dealer. Magnepan had used them at two audio shows and they were pristine with full warranty and dressed the way I wanted. I got lucky with those. Buying used maggies can be daunting though. Shipping is very prohibitive and I don't live in an area where they come up too often. I'm also very particular about condition, finish etc.

I guess I was hoping that the advances in the technology since the 1.6s would have brought the LRSs close to what the 1.6s offered.

I've owned both, had the 1.6's for a good 9 yrs or so.

Agree with the others regarding a 3 series, that's a pretty big room and would probably try to swallow the LRS's up.

Personally I think "pound for pound" and for the money the 1.6's are the greatest speaker ever made -and I've owned a few Maggies and Apogees.

The LRS is a beauty; clear, air tight and extremely flexible with all kinds of music- but then again so are most Maggies.

Best part about the LRS is they have a 60 day return policy, no harm in giving them a shot side-by-side with your 1.6's.

Interesting. I thought once you Gunn'ed a pair of 1.6s audio nirvana was achieved and there was no place left to go.

...but you still don't have a 3-series.
I wish PG would still do 3-series mods, but he stopped doing those a few years back. Probably just too big and heavy. And even if he did, I would still use the stock crossover scheme. He does some things with his crossover mods that seem rather suboptimal with some models.
