Greetings,
Please pardon if the questions have been asked before. I've been searching in the past few days W/O getting much luck. Any comment or help will be much appreciated.
I've had various models in my systems over the years, including the SMGc, IIIa, and 3.5R. Both of the larger panels got de-laminated, so I have been without them for a long while. Recently, I acquired a set of used 2.7QR. They also had the de-laminated wires issue but the owner applied the 3M fix and they sang pretty sweetly when I listened to them. Cosmetically, it's a mess. The socks are removed and not in good shape. The wood trims show their age but are in decent shape. Thus, I have a couple of questions.

1/ It seems that beside the socks, there's another layer of grill cloth stretching between the wood trims - Can anyone confirm this?
2/ The cross-over wires and components are not flush with the MDF panels. The socks will be bulging with their shapes. Is this the reason for the 2nd grill cloth?
3/ There are 2 black end caps, I see screw holes in them. How are they attached to the trims or the MDF frame?

I'll call Magnepan to see if I can get a new grill cloth set. If you can share any photo I can use to restore the socks/grill, it'd be great.
Thanks in advance for your time and help.

I contacted Magnepan about buying new socks for my MG-1.5QR's. I was told they were $35 per sock plus $20 for shipping. I thought that was outrageous so my wife made me news ones using grill cloth that cost a whole lot less.

Here's a tip when installing the news socks. Use a hot soldering iron to poke holes thru the socks where screws go in. The iron will make a nice hole for the screw to pass thru and the heat will melt the fibers of the cloth to help prevent fraying of the fibers.

There are two grill cloths. The black one you see from the back is a "sock". The other one at the front is not. I have an instruction somewhere how to replace the one at the front. I think the black sock is there to limit the see-through of the front grill. Most speaker grill fabrics use to reduce the highest frequencies. Older Magnepan with the "burlap" fabric only had one layer of grills, just a "bag" held by many staples top and bottom.

Thank you for the tips. Did you make the new socks smaller than the panels then stretch them to fit over the speakers? What fabric did you use?
Someone has mentioned that Spandex is also good for Maggie socks also.

Sorry, the previous reply was meant for Stephen.
Thank you for the description of the sock and the front cover. So....there are 2 layers, would that affect the HF adversely?
I appreciate your offer to share the document. I'd like to receive the instruction if you can email to me or share on here.

The wife made them from speaker grill cloth I picked up at PartsExpress. She made a couple of test fits so the final socks fit nice and taut once they were stretched over the panels. Once the socks were stretched over each panel I used black thumb tacks (instead of staples) along with a little hot glue to seal the ends of the socks shut. They turned out great and saved me some coin in the end.

Thanks Roger for the photo.
I have everything except for the thinner wooden pieces next to the front cover. Where do they go? I think I figured out the re-assembly steps for the wings and front cover.

It seems that the speaker panel is supposed to be covered with a sock, then another cover is stretched between the wooden caps on top of the sock.
If so, why cover the 2.7QR's front side with 2 layers? Is it to tame the hot QR tweeter? Any comment would be appreciated.

I have made a PDF. Recieved an instruction of an audio buddy how to replace the fabric of the front cover.

Is there a place here where it can be uploaded?

You can also send me a PM with your E-Mail-Adress.

Thanks Roger for the offer.
I managed to Duck taped, stapled the sock to the speaker. A couple of trips to the local Home Depot and Dale and I got the bent screws replaced. Dale even has the Washer/cap set that cover the screws that complements the 2.7r's back side. The front covers and the wooden caps were fairly easy to work with. A bit of contact glue, duck tape, and a BBQ lighter helps to make the job easier.
