The last time I had 63s here at home I had to mount them angled in but with there outer edges on the side walls. Centres are about 9ft apart and us 2 about 8 feet away.

Near-field listening? And, no image width otherwise.

It's an L-shaped room the toe of which is a small dining area. The long diagonal is > 35 feet.

So, I'll be doing the same with the QUADs I now own. They'll be sitting on large DIY, push-pull, sealed subs as wide as the QUADs and about 19" / 45cm high. The front face of the sealed subs being a decent extension to the baffle area of the QUADs. There will be a DIY ported sub on its side and against the rear of each sealed sub.

Question? Is this edge to the wall and angled in a really, really bad thing to do? Some people seem to think it is.

But, that's not my experience from the last time. UK's HFN&RR had an article about this kind of thing a long time ago. Adding a large floor-to-ceiling baffle with a cut out - on the wall side - for the 63. Also angled in to face the listener.

The wall behind each QUAD is already damped with 54" high by 42" wide diff-sorbtion panels. El-cheapo* panels except for the printed fabric covers and stretcher timber frames.

* Long-fibre deep-pile wool-carpet remnants from carpet shops, behind the fabric covers, carpet is tacked to peg-board using carpet tacks along the top, two rows. Between the pegboard and walls is fabric-wrapped BAF. ? Old dry-cleaned pillows, compressed with concrete pavers and boards to ~ 2", cut to cover the peg board and stitched to the pegboard. The gap to the wall is ~ 2.5". Door-stoppers for stand-offs.

One day I - might - put some stiff 2" deep Corning fibreglass panels in, covered with fine mesh cloth, to replace the BAF.

Side wall placement is not an issue. Yes most speakers will sound horrible this way given their dispersion pattern.

In the horizontal plane the 63 has 55 degrees of dispersion. With near field listening the speakers will be toed in to the listening position if they are wide apart. There will be no reflection problem with the side wall at least with the higher frequencies.

Even rear wall damping is not required in most cases if they are far enough from the wall. The speaker is damped internally on the rear of the panel to attenuate high frequency.

Walker understood that speakers need to work and sound good in the average domestic listening environment. The speakers were designed with this in mind. It is amazing how consistent they sound no matter the room or set-up. Lots of room treatments, etc., are not required in most cases.

Thanks mate.

The right speaker is at a corner so there's nothing to its front / side.

The left speaker has curtains over a window in front of them, and I could easily damp that area with a second layer of curtains to make it all acceptable to the boss.

On still/ mild norther days I can slide that window back out of the way, too.

The loaner pair a few years back were in the same places and sounded fine. On mono signals wide-audio-bandwidth AM there was little difference in sound from either, using the balance control. ......

And, in any case that's where they have to go! :-)

Q'n When HP filtered @150Hz first order, would 20wpc of PP pentode power be enough?

One rebuilt/modded LEAK St20 - I have two.

Or do I just sell my two LEAK St20s and blue-print / pooge the Summer use SS amp, its a Fostex 300?

20 watts is plenty for most Quad owners. It all depends on the size of the room and how loud you like to play.

I think I was going down 'an interesting rat-hole'.

IF I find that I definitely prefer the sound and / or extra 6 or more db of headroom from the FOSTEX 300 -

I will be thinking about selling the LEAKs.

Even IF I LIKE one for Winter, the other one is going to be a tad redundant.
Might even get enough for it to afford a Dspeaker 2.0. Tilt control and all.

Thanks again.
