Eminent Tech LFT-8b vs LFT-16a

 I would love to own either of these loudspeakers but unfortunately there are no ET dealers in my country so no chance to audition.

I can't find any reviews that directly compare the two but a Hifi-Pig reviewer (Jerry) later said (of the LFT-16a's): "I actually preferred them to their floorstanding (and 150% dearer) big brothers, which were a bit laidback for me."

Has anyone here had a chance to listen to both and if so, what are your impressions?

 I haven't listened to LFT-16's, but I don't agree the LFT-8's are laid back. If anything, they're too forward in stock form for me.

Just curious as to if you enjoy the lft8s with the tweeters set on hi or med output? I only ask because I've never really considered the 8s as "laid back", but then again I do run them on the high setting. Middle just seems to take to much sparkle away, though this setting on the wrong recording can making for an unenjoyable listening experience. - thanks, Bill

I've heard the 16s, they are very good but are best used as you would any monitor speaker. The 8s need space to breath and produce a much larger sound stage. That said, if you can get away with the 8s, those are the ones to have imho. The 16s are a good second but at that price point there are other options for a monitor speaker.

The ET8 are really a price point killer, but equipment & set up needs will play a big part of what you get out of them.

 After talking with Bruce Thigpen, I found out the tweeters are somewhat "hotter" on later LFT-8b's. Even the "low" setting was too much for me, so I added an external resistor to lower it even further.

Some of the issue with the "forward" sound of the LFT-8's is actually the woofer. :) The cone resonance is not properly attenuated by the crossover network and is easily audible. I fashioned a decent/easy fix for this which I outlined here on the PA a while back.

I have other issues with the crossover as well. :)

 It was a few months ago. A simple RC circuit added across the woofer terminals does the job effectively. You do have to pull the woofer loose from the front panel to perform the modification. You can't add it elsewhere.

If you'd like to experience the issue, simply run the woofer system by itself and perform a full range sweep test over five seconds or so. Be prepared to cover your ears when get into the 2khz range. :) The woofer shrieks audibly in this range.
