The inexpensive types found at most hardware stores work nicely. That is what I use around the house and shop. They are not the most accurate but will give you the actual humidity level within a few percent. That is adequate.

The most comfortable humidity range for humans is 35-45%. That also happens to be the ideal range for stats.

I didn't have as good luck, but it has been a while. I found many of the inexpensive humidity gauges weren't accurate when the humidity was less than about 50%. One exception was an Airguide that was grey metal and round.

Notice how hair curls when it is more humid? That was the mechanism in the old humidity gauges, a hair.

on the 8th and will learn using just such a cheap weather centre (with extra outdoor sensors) to learn, along with the system's menu and user manual.

As we had 'whole of house' evaporative cooling installed a few years back, the new unit has been calculated to manage for that.

The ceiling vents for the evap. cooling in the L/DR have been blocked off and the duct, as well. I will be learning what setting is most likely to keep us within 35-45%.

Summer heat can be quite dry down here in Canberra, so is an Rh LOWER than 35% bad for 'stats, too?

TIA once more.

Low humidity is not a problem.

The only electrostatic speakers I have experience with are ESL-63's and it seems like the lower the humidity the better. Back on humidity gauges, the one I rely on is a traceable VWR.

It has been a number of years since we used evaporative cooling, when we did, the more ventilation the better the cooling, and we would switch to refrigeration when the dew point approached 50.

Not real familiar with evaporative cooling here in Virginia where high summer ambient humidity is the rule. However it is my understanding the evaporative coolers can raise the indoor humidity to over 60% which ain't so hot for stats and other electronics. The split unit will probably be more friendly to your stats if not to your wallet

I misread, I have a mini-split and it has a low humidity setting which increases the hysterisis. But because the temperature sensor is in the unit, in AC mode it leaves the fan on all of the time, which is annoying. I contacted the manufacturuer who did not offer a solution, so I built a remote control that contained a temperature sensor.
