then there are nights like this where cymbals hover and shimmer in mid air, snare shots are accurate, crisp.

At first I thought it was 'clean' electricity running through the system but then again I've got Xmas lights outside going (well if you count three 'star showers' Xmas light ;), TV on (muted), Laptop, lights on in the kitchen...

Coming from you, the subject alarmed me a little as I was just passing by. I am glad it is not as bad as I first feared.

And you are not alone. Where I live in South Florida, I was long mystified by what I call "the bewitching hour"; often at right after 10pm, music simply sweetens up mightily. Sure, I already knew that I am in a bad RF/EMI minefield; with the help of Al Sekela it was eventually conquered. These days, even on punishingly "noisy" summers any part of the day became enjoyable enough.

However, while the contrast was reduced vs the "hour", the latter still remained a pretty constant fixture. It took us a while to figure it out. We discovered that one of the power company transformers at the nearby park is shared with our block.

And so, when the park shuts down its huge flood lights for the evening at 10p, the sweets start coming out sweeter.

I agree with one responder that ears will hear differently at times. Yesterday I went for a swim as part of my exercise routine and all that afternoon and evening, my ears heard "thickly". I did not have water in my ears that would drain out when I tilted my head, but there was a definite thickening of sound from the audio system. Once I realised it, I quit trying to do any critical listening--it was just too frustrating.

Today my ears are hearing better!

I do not mean to suggest by this that problems with supplied electricity might be very much at fault in another listener's system. But I have experienced pretty dramatic differences in my hearing from day to day.

Best,

George Roland

Not only ears but psychologically there are times you are just not in the mood.
To get around the electricity issue I use a Pure Power Regenerator

I'm usually asleep by 10 PM but when I am up listening background noise is down at least 5db C weighted. Here in the Northwest those dams keep voltage steady at 120+.....and I thank all of your tax paying ancestors for them.

I'm gonna be a total heretic, and say I think it has to do with one's readiness to listen.

Compare it to eating a great meal. At the drop of a hat, at any moment can you sit down and totally enjoy a great meal? Of course not. A great dining experience is when the food is great, and one is totally "in the mood."

I think all this stuff about nighttime and prime listening does not have to do so much electricity and such, but that that is when many of us sink into a receptive moment.\

I bet there are some people who are always ready to listen. Not me. But I'll be happy for when it does happen.

The power issue is real and easy to measure. My battery PS for the source components reads the wall voltage and it is 119V daytime and 124V late night.

During the day running on battery makes a big difference, during the night the difference is much smaller.

is where a lot of the interpretation happens. You hear best early in the morning - before a day of noise exposure. Stress and mental distractions effect your hearing as well.
Listening to music is a meditative event - it should be prepared for and entered into gracefully.

That is where it measures differently daytime and eve.

Also sounds cleaner.

Flushing out ear wax when necessary is helpful.

Last night it was exceptionally cold outside with pretty low humidity. We usually let the temperature fluctuate to some degree by just not adjusting the thermostat, so even though the house is pretty "tight", it does get somewhat cooler inside when the temperature its cold outside. Maybe a swing of +/- 3 degrees. with all the windows shut.

I had let the system warm up for 4 or 5 record sides and it sounded remarkably great. Much more detail, the highs were just ringing out, plenty of shimmer, tons of energy, cymbals thwacks were startling; it just sounded faster and more alive. My wife even came down stairs (a rare event) to comment on the sound and started dancing to Count Basie/ Sinatra at the Sands. Now that never happens......

Obviously this is not enough data to prove it, but the preliminary evidence suggests that temperature and humidity can have a very powerful effect on the sound of a good system. Anybody have that experience?

Yes, which is why the room has its own AC unit and dehumidifier. And its a basement as the flooding early this year reminded me. The heat from the tubes and bass amp (when it is running) is enough to raise the temp and trigger the AC in the cold of an ohio winter.
