Hello,

I am giving some thought to adding 2 REL subwoofers to mate with my electrostatic speakers, could anyone suggest a good sounding easy to use mixer that could be used to send 100hz or so to the subs and everything else to the electrostats? I realize this is primarily a maggie board but thought perhaps someone could chime in.

I use a RAM tube works setup like that. Two smallish subwoofers with an external crossover; you need your own bass amp as well. It works very well with my Stax F83's. I thought the REL';s had built-in crossovers,

What you need is the filter on the REL and use a DIY 1st order high pass filter for the ESL put in between the preamp and the power amp. It is just a capacitor or a capacitor and resistor, quite simple to do. It can be housed in a box or incorporated into an interconnect.

The subwoofer level relative to mains would be controlled on the REL.

Need details for construction of the 6 db filter between the preamp and power amp. After choosing a value of capacitor that matches the input impedance of the power amp at the desired frequency - connect a path using the middle conductor of RCA cables - correct? Need two sets of preamp outputs to do this, one set to the subs and one to the main - correct? Thanks, John

Correct on all counts but that the single pre out can be used with a Y splitter to do the job.

These are transparent and convenient ans solid.

The advantage (probably not the only one) of an active crossover is that you can use a steeper slope. The one I have is at least 12 db/octave (can't remember exactly). This makes me feel safer about the ELS speakers, and also avoids a resonance peak they have at about 80 Hz.

although it was 3-way Maggies that I added the subs to. So the miniDSP 10x10Hd that I used provides a full 4-way XO.

Given all you want is a 12dB HP filter for the stats, you can make do with the smallest (& cheapest) miniDSP unit - the 2x4. Or the new 2x4Hd, for USD199 instead of USD99. What this does - apart from providing you with a filter - is:
1. enable you to adjust input & output levels of the subs and Maggies.
2. gives you room EQ for the sub frequencies (and more!).

You would set the sub's own LP filter to 100hz (-6dB point) and, I suggest:
* first, try a 24dB HP slope for the stats @ 100hz (-6dB point)
* and later try a 12dB HP filter at 95hz (-6dB point) ... which is what I am about to do.

Andy

I was just reading about a soon to be released product by Dspeaker, the X4 room correction device that will do a stereo pair of speakers and also a stereo pair of subwoofers all at once, I think this may be just what the doctor ordered
