It's actually buzzed for a while now, it's nothing new, I've just been ignoring it. It seems to have gotten slightly worse though now that they are being used again. I think it's a mid panel lift... the very last wire at the end of the panel. I can see where the glue is cracked along the edge of the wire and when I gently touch the panel there it makes crackly noises.

So what to do? I'm not 100% certain that's where the buzz is coming from. On top of that I'm not technically inclined or skilled to do any kind of panel repair. If it's just a matter of layering some kind of glue on top of that spot then yeah I could maybe handle that... but I've read the repair articles.... that I'm not able to do!

They're gunned... so I'm not sure if having magnepan refurbish the panel is an option? Or since they are gunned if Mr. Gunn would do repairs?

Can you just buy replacement panels from Magnepan?

Should I just ignore it until it gets bad enough to warrant a refurb?

help me out here!

thx

Danielle

You do not need replacement panels!, it doesn't matter if they're gunned or stock, the wire has simply become unglued and 'lifted', the only money you need to spend is on a can of acetone and DAP glue (total less than $10).

The acetone is to make sure the old glue is removed and a secure bond is ensured.

The hardest part is undoing the staples to remove the cloth. But give PG a call anyway, won't hurt.

thanks, yeah I realized that right after I posted, all the better, no need to get 'under the hood' if the hood's already removed.

Best if she can post a pic of the area(s) affected.

Danielle,

You say you've read the repair articles. I've not done it myself but in principle is seems fairly simple. Use the acetone to carefully clean away the original adhesive in the area(s) where wire has separated. Then apply minimal amount of DAP (trusting GL's recommendation) to re-glue the wire to the mylar. Since the "wired" side of the panels is exposed on the back side of Gunned versions it seems like a simple enough process.

Think of it as an "arts and crafts" project! ;^)

If these are newer speakers, I think I would be concerned about the reason for the failure.
Changed ambient environment? Improper screw(s) tightening on the transducer perimeter? Etc, etc.
It sounds like a straightforward repair, but maybe there is an underlying cause.

Dave.

They are at least 15 years old, have been through 5 moves and shipping back and forth to mr. Gunn at least 5 years ago.... I'm surprised there's not more going on.

He has a bit of an updated procedure, sounds much easier than the other articles make it out to be!

Spray one even coat of DAP touch & tone on the driver, then use the other DAP to stick the wires back down. The touch & tone I guess takes care of the old bad adhesive without having to use acetone plus prevents further delamination.

Personally I'd do it the old way. I'd be careful of the amount sprayed on the 'naked' mylar. One school of thought is it does no harm, the other being the amount of mass added (albeit negligible) hampers it's ability to reveal "macro detail".

But 'even if' the second theory holds absolutely no truth to it, my neurosis brain would never be convinced.

Again, IMHO.
