I was a Magnepan dealer for many years. What this is about is the "openness" of the Maggies (no box) versus a box speaker.

We were to put our hands together, side by side, a few inches in front of our mouths and talk to the customer about the speaker. This showed them (or let them hear) what a muffled sound a box speaker is supposed to have. We would then pull our hands apart quickly while still talking to show, (or again hear) the difference of the openness that was now very apparent. Try it, it works.

Seemed to work, (well, helped anyway). I sold hundreds of pairs of Maggies. I really think it was the sound of the speaker itself that sold it, but any little trick helps.

if you were to have spread your hands apart approx 8-10" during the demo you'd actually present a fair representation of Maggies.

How so?

Either of these "hand experiments" seem pretty silly at demonstrating the difference between an open-baffle and closed-baffle system.

A person using his hands on/near his mouth might create a bit of horn-effect......but that's about it.

Dave.

Picture a person with their hands in the 'stick em up' position except their palms are facing toward themselves, and spaced not so wide apart.

When they begin to talk, sing, etc., this is often the image I get when facing my maggies; as the soundstage is playing behind them.
