I own a pair of ALIII and during a move one of the speakers fell on a hard floor and shattered the magnets ripping the mylar off, it's beyond repair...

I thought it was time to upgrade to a pair of BG RD48 but when I checked Parts Express I quickly found out in horror about BG buyot and consequent dry out of BG parts everywhere. DISASTER!

I'm desperately looking for a pair of BG RD 48: I live in LA.

Thanks in advance,
Giancarlo

You may want to substitute a line of Dayton AMTPRO-4 - say about 6 pieces

You will have to damp them down with a resistor in the crossover since they are more sensitive than the RD48, but they are similar in radiation pattern and performance to the RD48 when assembled into a line array.

Thanks Satie, I really appreciate you took the time to respond.
Unfortunately the Dayton AMTPRO-4 while is great transducer is designed to be used above 800Hz: even with a gentle high pass I doubt will be able to reproduce the lower frequencies as well as the RD48 or the original Carver transducer. The ALIII have a crossover frequency at 150HZ: a ribbon transducer capable of going that low is a tough one to find.

I still can't believe how hard is it to find a decent alternative: I found a manufacturer in China that has a a similar design as the RD40, but looks much thicker than the RD48:

I'm so desperate I'm looking into designing a completely new system using FPS transducers, but it would be a lot of work for a shot in the dark.

What drives me mad is that *I know* there must be a bunch of RD48's sitting in a warehouse after BG was shut down...

Thank Roger!
I do know about James Sauter: I was going to try to contact him in spite of the fact that many people warned me that he has not been returning calls for a while... This situation may be changed now but there is also the fact that the damage I inflicted on my ribbon is more that the usual war&tear on the main membrane he usually repair.

However something wonderful happened yesterday: I was about to give up on my ALIII so I contacted a guy who is selling a pair of BG Radia 520 to replace mine, when I found someone else selling a pair of RD48 on eBay! What are the odds?
I purchased them faster that you can say "Do it, NOW!".

Thanks for the help!

G

Congrats on finding a pair of RD48

That ribbon is quite a find. I did not see any Chinese brand speakers sporting this 43" planar driver.

They have a neodymium magnet version with a sensitivity spe of 103 db.

The FR of a line array of 6 AMTPRO-4 should allow an XO at 300hz at low order or around 200hz with a sharp XO.

"The FR of a line array of 6 AMTPRO-4 should allow an XO at 300hz at low order or around 200hz with a sharp XO."

Arraying increases efficiency and power handling, which will allow EQ'ing for more output down low, but does not extend FR, which in this case starts falling at the 800 Hz resonant freq, just like cone drivers.
