Norman M	I prefer my MMGs raised above the floor such that the vertical center of the speaker corresponds to the height of my ears above the floor (when seated). Otherwise I might find myself listening to them when lying on the floor. It could all well be room dependent.

I kind of went full circle. After reading how wonderful vertical and 8-12 inches off the floor was I built inexpensive stands that sounded great at first (more presence, bigger soundtsage). After a while however I missed the warm tonality and naturalness of the speakers closer to the floor so I brought them down, to about 4 inches, then on to a base about 2 inches with spikes and now full circle back to the original layout.

I guess if one likes brighter balance and bigger soundstage then vertical and 8-12" will do. Warm tonality- not so much.

An update:

MMGs are now on 12"x12"x4" concrete garden blocks (the partially open kind...) fully upright with 15lb dumb bells keeping them stable.

Impressions: more space/air in all dimensions. No noticeable increase/decrease in bass/treble.

This is pretty good...

Amp is a Wyred4Sound ST500, preamp Pass Labs X2.5. Most music is classical from string trios to opera. Organ CDs sound particularly good...

I have owned maybe ten sets of Magneplanars going back to 1977 including modified MG-IIa, Tympani 1-C, and MG-1.6QR. I keep the SMGa as my baseline for what sounds "right". They are not home theater speakers. They never disappoint.

Unfortunately SMGa is the one model I've never had a chance to hear. I still have my original set of Maggies (MGI Imp), in fact listening to them right now and I really like the warm, musical sound.

In addition to my MMG's I also have the 1.7's. They sound good but I think Magnepan basically had to keep up with the times that seem to demand a brighter more detailed sound. Maybe something was lost in the process...

In a way it's strange because I never hear the hyper-reality of modern speakers/equipment when I go to a live concert but at the same time it is kind of fun to listen to this enhanced reality effect of modern equipment.

I know because I had a pair I was using with it. I'm selling it for 400.00. It's 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 350 into 4 ohms. LineSource

DTS ma 7.2 Audiophile Posts: 56 Location: New Jersey Joined: January 13, 2015	I would like an xpa-2 just for the extra ummp for the maggies, as they take all the power you throw at them, that being said the xpa-200 gives enough without clipping, and will work well for some time, so i can just play my music and not worry and tinker with my setup, i like the fact i can ship back to them if problems arise.good warranty. I wouldn't be surprised if the XPA-200 is actually closer to 200 watts per channel than 150. It should have plenty of current with 90,000 uf of capacitance, which is really what Maggies need.

I've found a box here at work that should work for the stands and I'll try to get them out tomorrow. I'll also take pictures of them so you have something to go by for putting them back together. I no longer have the instructions. They're pretty simple though so you shouldn't have any problems. They definitely improve focus by standing the MMGs up and raising them. Another thing that I think you'll appreciate is how it raises the sound stage to a realistic level.
