Got an unexpected call this morning from House of Stereo. .7s arrived today. After hooking them up in place of my gunned 1.6s I must say I'm impressed. I could easily live with them straight out of the box.

From my phone, better pics to follow. Note how the wood strips are attached, exactly as I remembered.

Thank you sir, it's been a labor of love and thoroughly enjoyable. It is my living room so it will never be acoustically ideal but it works and keeps the spousal unit happy.

it looks like Magnestand modded your 1.6s and you prefer the .7? or about similar performance..., posted on July 19, 2015 at 07:29:34

I knew that question was going to come up. The .7s are straight out of the box and sound amazing, maybe even a little more precise in the upper midrange and treble. Concise bass was the biggest suprise. Certainly not as dynamic of a sound stage as the gunned 1.6s. Everything is a bit bigger with them. Would I trade, in a word no way, but I certainly could live with them.

The .7's are on my wish list for my living room as a "Zone 2" setup with my present system. A friend and I built some "gunned style" Frankenpans using IIIa's. I have a post here with a picture. http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/vt.mpl?f=mug&m=216892. They resemble yours with the exception that we mounted the tweeter on hinges for imaging tweaking. But other than that they look near identical. Excellent design. Thanks for the info on the .7's as I hope in the near future to add some, and congrats on the son's scholarship. Awesome!

Thank you I appreciate that. I wouldn't hesitate to get the .7s, they are impressive. I was a bit surprised that they could fill my living room the way they do, bonus.
By the way, magnificent job on the IIIs, I would love to hear them.

Thanks for the kudos on the IIIa's. A close friend of mine did the frames and I did all the wiring and rebuilding of the panels. It was quite a job for me as I am in a wheelchair, but I try not to let that get in my way.. :) I later sent them to the factory as my post describes as the mylar on one panel was bad. They were very reasonable as to charges. They do sound great. Takes a while to break them in as you well know. How do yours sound before and after they were "Gunned" I have no point of reference as I bought the IIIa's in a less than ideal state. The sound now is pretty awesome. I am not too well schooled in describing how they sound, but I can tell you the mids jump out at you without being overwhelming. You definitely know that they are there. I do listen for them as well. Sometimes I am too analytical when i listen to music being that I was so involved in the construction. The Tympani's offer a well balanced bass that kind of matches the improved foil mids. Of course the ribbon tweeters are second to none in my opinion. I am really interested in your description of how yours sound now.

What about the MMG's or Super MMG's? Everyone rants about them as they supposedly over built them to introduce and entice prospective customers to purchase 1.x or even 3.x planars.

There's certainly a lot of variance here. I don't consider my 3.6s as being able to "fill my living room", so I set them asid, and only use a Tympani IV-A. My listening area (20 X 20 X 8) has nearly the same dimensions as does yours, (20 X 20 X 12), but still has less volume than does yours.
Perhaps some day, and only just for 'kicks' you can get a T-IV/A in there to hear what "filling a listening room" sounds like.

I certainly require a huge grain of salt while reading in the asylum.

I suppose that's subjective now isn't it. My Vienna Acoustics Baby Grands sound fantastic in a small bedroom but just don't cut it in the living room; these do.

IMHO it's about as subjective as the pain one feels after being hit on the head by a baseball bat. In this hobby nearly everything we hear is "subjective", perhaps only not whether any sound at all comes out of our speakers. Recording venues like listening rooms all have different properties so recordings made and/or listened to therein follow suit. My listening room is relatively 'dead', as it was 23 years ago when I first moved into it. (My previous listening room in which I first used Tympani ICs about 40 years ago, eventually followed my current Tympani IV-A was also on the dead side of normal.) I think it's accepted that Maggies are not particularly 'dynamic' and it takes a lot of volume to get them off the ground and really 'fly', however the idea that a speaker the size of a .7 could *fill* rooms the sizes of ours with sound runs contrary to my expectations. Perhaps one day an inmate will claim the .7 is equal to the Sound-Lab A-1 in its ability to fill their 20 X 20 X 12 (foot) listening room with sound, of course it being "subjective" and all.
