For years I have been dreaming of Tympani IVa's, but since they don't come for sale so often here in Europe, I have almost lost my hope. But you know what; few days ago pair of T-IVa's moved into our house in Finland, coming all the way from southern Germany! :=) I couldn't be more thrilled to get them up & running with my DEQX HDP-3.

Unfortunately I don't *yet* have a listening room where to set them properly, and I also need to get some power amps when the budget allows, but still, this is a huge step towards my dream setup.

Thank you very much for all wise & helpful forum members in here that have been helping me with my numerous questions regarding Tymps; you showed me the way! :=)

I am sure you have something to drive them with, even if only to soto voce levels.

Progress toward realizing ones dreams is such an exiting thing ... especially when that dream is Tympani IV's. Congratulations to you!

Thanks!

The first thing that I noticed is that how thin & wobbly those frames actually are. I *think* that it could not be a good thing for the basses sound quality, and it would be quite easy to strengthen the frames with few 2x2" bars and diagonal supports on the back side. But I have also read few comments that making them more solid might actually be a bad thing, since it changes the drivers behaviour & frequence response somehow.

So; all real life experiences regarding this are more than welcome!

I like my 2.5's with the stock stands. That being said, maybe Josh will chime in with his thoughts as he owns a pair.

The bass panels really need to be stiffened. There is no downside to it. A strong rigid frame like the Mye stands will give you tighter deeper bass and less (or no) slap

I'm the original owner of a 25 year old set of IV-As. Although mine have remained 'stock' and I've played them fuse and hearing blowing loud, (especially during my younger years), I've yet to hear anything that could be called 'slap', not even on from either Telarc digital 1812 canons or the Mercury Living Presence (stereo) 1812 canons. (I have the MLP mono CD of the 1812, but haven't gotten around to listening to it, yet).

Knocking on MDF, I never had any delam or issue requiring repair. At this rate, they may soon outlive me. :-((

With you on being outlived by the speakers.

I only got slap on test tones and when the speakers were not braced I thought I may have had slap on some really loud bass drum and on Widor's toccata for organ (pedal notes to 16 hz) at uncomfortably loud levels. But other than the suspected slap in that case I did not get slap playing music and definitely not when the speakers were braced.

Terrific - enjoy! :-)) nt, posted on April 4, 2015 at 20:41:59

Interested to know more about this 8-channel DAC, Chris.

At the end of the year (when we finally move into our new house) I will be changing my trusty analogue active XO to a DSP setup - hopefully, using two 2x4 miniDSP units. I'm doing this because I'll be implementing 2x custom-built 15" subs in the new listening room, and the builder of the subs uses DSP to provide:
* the sub LP & main speaker's woofer HP filters
* delay on the woofer, to match the sub, and
* LF room correction.

If I have to delay the woofers ... I have to delay the other drivers as well - so I have to embrace a digital XO, not an analogue one! So that's a major game-changer for me (with a vinyl rig) ... I hope I don't hear any down-side.

One of the advantages of the miniDSP units is that the boards allow you to insert an external DAC - so I am on the lookout for this upgrade.

Thanks,

Andy

PS: Hope all the snow has melted; I understand it was a pretty fierce winter!

Check out the multiple threads on diyaudio about the Soekris r2r dac. It looks to be very interesting. I have 4 of them and waiting for the designer to update the firmware for multichannel usage, which he promises to do shortly...

Andy,

A number of fellows have implemented eight-channel ESS9018-based projects at this point. I imagine you will be using the miniDSP miniSHARC board so this seems a very nice "integrated" option. But, still somewhat of a DIY project.

Cheers,

Dave.

Yes indeed. That's a high-priced commercial product with excellent performance, but there are a wide variety of solutions in between. I've seen a few used e18 units for sale as well.
I suspect Andy might want to build something since he's not afraid of tackling the DIY route.

Another option of many:
