Maggie DWM with Quad 63s???

In the post below I admit to experimentation with using Magneplanar panels to augment the bass of my ESL 63s.

Hope I have not violated any animal rights in the making of this hybrid.

The combination of my SMGcs crossed at about 60 hz and the 63s is better, somehow, than either alone...as far as weight and depth of the low bass is concerned.

I am aware of other folks who have used Tympani bass panels with Quads (Kentaja is one of them) with good results, but since Tympani bass panels, if you can find them, are going to be pretty pricy and room filling, physically, I wonder how the DWM would work with the Quads?

As best I can tell from reading, the DWM would do some of the same things the SMGc panel does, but do it much better and some deeper.

Anybody tried the DWM with Quads or another electrostat?

Thanks,

Louis

I use a vandersteen 2W subwoofer with my 988's. Pretty good combination due to 3 things in my view:
1. 2W 3-8"drivers fire downward making room interaction less critical.
2. X - over slope at 80 hz is first order so integration is very smooth
3. and having 3 rather small drivers the 2w can respond to transients very
dynamically keeping up with the Quads.

BTW the 63 and 988 - basically the same- really are no slouch speakers reproducing bass.

Were you running the 63's full range, or through a high-pass filter?

I have the original ESLs, and the DWM idea is intriguing, gotta admit. I'm using two Hsu STF-2 subs now, with a DSPeaker Anti-Mode, subs crossed at 50 Hz or so.

I ran the 63s both full range and through the high pass of a Dahlquist LP 1 electronic crossover when I was experimenting with the SMGcs.

In both set ups the SMGcs were crossed at approximately 60 hz.

After a couple of weeks of listening, the SMGcs went back to the back of the basement (storage).

The SMGcs, in some ways, worked better than any of the box woofers I tried, but there were still some problems because the SMGcs needed a serious kick in the buttocks to get moving. This meant I was constantly fiddling with the level controls for the bass amps (Plate amps)

Right now I am back to running the 63s full range by themselves. With a Quad 909, they produce a lot more, and a lot deeper bass than you would expect. What is there is spectacularly clean and well defined, just not much air movement.

The DWM is certainly intriguing...wish somebody would try a pair of them with Quads.
